gear change issues, 1st to 2nd

Featured Replies

Swmbo advises she's been having issues, for a while, going from 1st to 2nd occasionally.

But only 1st to second. Happened to me today. Clutch pedal fully down.

As its only when changing up, could it be a linkage, or likely simply the clutch cable needs tightening?

My wife used to have the same problem, then I realised that she wasn't pushing the gear lever firmly enough over to the left when shifting from first to second and I guess it occasionally missed the gate. After a little tactful instruction, no problem at all now!

They all do that sir..... A well known pronlem when the oil is cold..........

Never done it before, and even did it to me after a 20min drive :S

mine did that,so slowed the gear change speed, dont race up or down the gears,

then it got worse over a month so put it in the garage to check it out found the thrust bearing sticking on the shaft.

so whipped the gearbox out last week, put in single flywheel, new clutch, all now ok even silky smooth change.

Will I have a thrust bearing being petrol?

Mileage?

Maybe a gearbox oil change would help it certainly did on my last Octy at 100k.

42k.

Will I have a thrust bearing being petrol?

Yes, it's part of the transmission, not the engine.

Ah, thanks. Only ever heard people with diesels mentioning thrust bearings.

Just had the same problem fixed after much faffing with the Skoda Warranty people... eventually turned out to be the syncro... now replaced all is smooth again.

I've noticed what is perhaps a similar issue on mine, engaging reverse and 1st on occasion. Seems completely random - haven't discovered a pattern or way of always making it do it.

Think it might be fresh clutch time anyway, as 80k is approaching and a map's about to be attached

Would like to know what it is for sure though. Almost like a double de-clutch action is needed to clear it and allow for either R or 1st to be engaged. Has never happened in any other gears.

Cheers,

Steve
