Warped Brake Discs

Featured Replies

Hi there Guys & Dolls

I have a 55 plate vRS (mark 1) which seems to be eating brake discs.

It has done 83k and I have owned it since 62k. I replaced the discs (and pads) shortly after I bought the car with Mintex disc and it was not long before I was suffering from the judder under braking indicating warped discs. I then replaced them again. Problem solved, until under 10k later the brakes are doing the same thing again!!

I must say I am slightly puzzled by this. I'm not a boy racer, nor a late/heavy braker!

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

The pads seem fine, the discs spin okay when the brake it off, so there does not appear to be any rubbing.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Do you stand on the brakes when stopped rather than using the handbrake?

Try going out on a quiet motorway and when there are no other cars and from 70mph brake quite hard down to 10mph and repeat this 10 or so times, in short succession, or until the brakes start to feel odd (stop if this happens).

That should hopefully burn the deposits off the brake discs.

If you don't stand on the brakes at all when stopped, then I'd look at your brake pads and consider using different pads.

Another post on here said that brake judder can be caused by using the foot-brake to hold the car still when stationary in traffic. Apparently the pads cool that part of the disc that is in contact so causing differential contraction of the disc. Especially true if hard braking is used to come to a stop, even in town traffic.

it seems quite common for non OEM discs. Unit 18 said the only "cheaper" non oem discs they would fit to my car were Brembo.

maybe your glazing the pads?

I use Delphy discs and ferodo premier pads(very cheap)...the breaks are betweed weak and acceptable

the discs start to rust very early, but no judder at all, they wear very smooth and after 13.000 miles allmost no wear

I will keep them another 10.000miles max....

So,guys, what do you think about EBC brakes?

I want to buy turbo grooves discs and yellow pads....I just want strong breaks

Sadly it just seems to be the case with cheap discs. They are cheaper for a reason :(

No such thng as a bargain these days, you always pay the price one way or another.

EBC have good reviews and i sell thousands of discs a year with very very few warranty problems. Most are normally customer error or incorrect ussage. As far as the pads are concerned i would use the Red Stuff for road and light track use, and only go to the Yellows if you drive like a crazed man everywhere and do alot of track days :)

I use the Ferodo DS2500 pads for the road, and have sets of the DS3000 pads for when i do track days but sadly these are not the cheapest pads around :(

Make sure you tighten the wheel nuts to the correct torque as this can warp discs to due to the uneven tension on the discs.?? just a another possibility?

I had the tarox g88 discs on mine and found them rubbish! Lots of noise when on the brakes, vibration too on steering wheel and peddle. Now have oe discs and tarox pads, massive improvement and cheeper than the tarox discs.

I have EBC turbo groove with Green pads, excellent setup. I had the fluid done at the same time and the overall effect from the Mintex disks with OEM pads was Night Vs Day.
