What's the Black Magic Paint Quality like

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Got a 54 Reg. Silver Fabia VRS with 60K on it.

Like the car and saving me a fortune in fuel costs over previous motors, so think I'm going to upgrade it to a newer.

Just wondered what the Black Magic Paint was like, haven't had a Black car in ages as I know they are a pain to keep clean and most really show up and slight scratch and chip like a sore thumb.

Think last Black car I had was just an old Citroen Saxo VRS many years ago and the painto on that was as soft as anything.

What's it like on the Fabias, it's another old shape VRS not the Latest Model.

Any info. appreciated.

Cheers

The Black Magic paint is VERY hard indeed. But it's still black so you do need to keep it clean to look good. And like all VAG paint, it seems very prone to stone chips.

Skoda paint is generally excellent with good paint depth from new (so it will take a couple of machine polishing sessions with ease) and a good freedom from factory defects eg. orange peel etc.

Great Cheers,

Never had a chance to look closly at a Black one before.

Silver's good as doesn't show the dirt, not that I mind too much as polish mine most weeks anyway.

Will see what the 06 Plate ones like, if it's good then they'll be a Silver VRS for sale very shortly.

Shows swirls like anything (guess I need to give it a good go over with a Dual Action), looks dirty a few hours after washing :D

Please don't ever buy a black car. You're heart will be broken trying to keep it clean!!!! :'(

The black paint might be hard but the lacquer is very soft and scratches easily showing up as white. Unfortunately the Race Blue on my present vRS also has this very soft lacquer and there's a scratch on the rear bumper already....

silver hides dirt better for longer, black doesn't. Thats about the only difference. Black does look spot on when fully treated to some TLC though. Silver never gets that good in comparison.

Hi Jim,

Yeh know it will be a real pain to keep clean but they do look good for the 5 mins they are clean!!!

Are they really bad for swirls? Know the Citroen I had was but thought the paint on the Fabia would be better.

I think swirls are relative - I think all Skoda paint is rock hard.

A Saxo VRS?? Was that the 1000bhp W12 Quad turbo they made as a LTD edition??

lol... OK yeh slight mistake there, Saxo VTS not VRS!!! unfortunately wasn't the 1000 bhp ltd. Edition!!!

Used it as a daily runabout as also had a 4.0 Litre V8 Series II Discovery, so needed something a little more economical to do the 60 mile round trip each day to work.

Black magic paint is very nice when polished and when the sun is shining there is a blue and red sparkle to it :)

The actual PAINT might be hard but that's irrelevant when the LACQUER covering it is very soft and scratches easily - the problem is the scratches are white...

I'm sorry, but I disagree. The clearcote on these things is VERY hard. You need high-cut polishes to make any impact at all. I don't know what you're doing to yours but it really shouldn't be scratching up white.

Stick to silver, much easier to look after. Although I do wish at times I had a red one, they do look nice when polished up with black wheels and details.

Hi Guy's,

Thanks for all the replies, have placed a deposit on a Black 06 Plate Fabia VRS so the 54 Plate Silver one will be on the For Sale Section soon.

Cheers again for your advise.

Got to look at what polishes etc. are best for black now.

Although not used daily, mines been fine in the last 4 months i've had it.

Just clean it once a week and keep the polish and wax topped up and you'll be fine!

I can't see that the colour has any relevance here because the paint is covered with a clear lacquer. I did admittedly try T-Cut Black Polish but found it no different to any other polish - it certainly didn't cover or cope with the white scratches that appear all over the car. I don't have any close-ups of these on my former black car but here's a poor shot of the blue one - it shows up rather whiter in reality...

My black one was so bad that when I complained under warranty that the paint was defective:

"G. My biggest gripe is the dreadful paintwork on the car. It seems to be either very soft paintwork or very susceptible to minor scratches appearing. People say this is an inherent problem with all black cars. Perhaps you could look at mine and give me your opinion?"

...the garage admitted they were all like that and gave me some free 3M "Finesse-it" Finishing Material which they used together with an electric polisher and some heat to get the scratches out - but it's hard work without an electric polisher...
