Irratic idle

Hi Folks.

My Dad has a 1989 MKII GOlf 1.8 GL,(NON Injection) genuine 65.000k on the clock.

The problem he is having is when the car is running and you put your foot down to ecellerate the car virtually stalls, then shoots off like a rocket, (Pretty scary on roundabouts) it is so unpredictable,

he has taken it to a few Vdub garages but without much succsess,

When the car is first fired up it stinks of petrol,when on idle it's puffing out black smoke and shaking. The car is really hevy on fuel about 22 to the gallon

It has passed its MOT emmissions test with flying colours.

I dont know if it would be electrical, or is the carb shot ?.

Are there any other MKII owners out there that may have had or having this problem.
