I've never heard the term before so maybe it's an antipodean thing. If I search I get a load of Aussie websites.

Anyway my rear tyres are wearing a bit unevenly, making a scallop type pattern around the edge. This then makes the tyre do a woo, woo, woo sort of noise as you drive along.

Some people say it's asymetric tyre treads and they just wear that way (I have Dunlop Direzzas. Well I did until the P Zeros went on the rear today)

The Firestone fitter reckons it's caused by the shocks being on their way out. And they are getting a bit bouncy.

Some websites suggest it's the wheel alignment - which is not adjustable at the rear and the alignment check today came out alright.

I don't want my expensive new tyres to wear the same way :)

Thoughts anyone?

If it was a Ford Mondeo I would say it was the rear subframe bushes!

I agree with your fitter, sounds like your shocks need replacing.

This is a very common fault on the MKII Octavia and the MK5 Golf and it's all down to the geometry setting being wrong.

You cant adjust the rear suspension on a mk1 octy,i agree with your fitter,sounds like worn rear shocks to me! :)

I've never heard this term before in this context. Have the tread blocks formed a saw-tooth shape with the high edge leading? if so, then it's often caused by repeated hard braking.

It isn't that - I don't really use the brakes :) Still on original pads at 97,000km

How many miles had the rear tyres done before you replaced them? i see this on our works cars which dont get the tyres rotated so the rears stay on the rear until there worn out & usally cover a big mileage,i find its more of a gradule wear over a long time & mileage then a quick one.Your shocks may be worn but not worn out (if you get what im saying!) id check all the rear bushes & shocks & springs & if all is ok keep a eye on your new tyres!

I see a lot of mk1's with this problem but weirdly only the ones with 16"+ wheels , the ones on 15" never do it so i am thinking its maybe to do with the wheel being a bit heavier and the shock having to work harder to keep it all in check. seems to affect all makes of tyres too and i think new shocks would definatly help with the problem..

OR drive it much faster and wear all of the tyre out before it gets chance to wear just the inner bit :p

mine are the same and when i swapped front to rear i almos convinced myself that a wheel bearing had gone

About 20,000km so not a huge distance.

The wheels are 18s but lighter than the stock wheel I think at 8.7kg each.

So maybe time to invest in new rear bushes as well.
