Burning rubber smell?

Featured Replies

Hi...any advice please.

I've picked up a new Fabia 16.tdi 105 which has covered 360 miles now. I live on the Isle of Wight where most of my journeys are short. Occassionally, the car has a smell like burning rubber when I get home, but I can't work out if it's from the engine, rear wheels or wherever.

The next trip will be fine with no smells at all. No warning lights come on, I'm not riding the clutch. Could it be just the fact that the car is new and still burning off odd bits of residue?

Hi

My wife has a 1.6 CR Elegance hatch and we have experienced the 'burning' smell you describe which was caused by the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regenerating. This happened at just short of 600 miles. The smell is quite distinctive (as mentioned in an earlier post - http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/174606-could-a-dpf-regeneration-cycle-interuption-cause-this-effect/ ) and should be accompanied with a raised idle speed of 1000 r.p.m. The cooling fan may run on for a few minutes after switching off. If your jouneys are mainly short one this may happen fairly frequently. The car will run fine without smells the next time you drive it following this regeneration. Should you get the DPF warning light coming on you should follow the instructions to drive the car at a speed above 38 m.p.h./ engine revs above 2000 r.p.m. for as long as it takes for the warning light to go out.(all contained in the owners handbook pages 32 and 139 ).

So in answer to your question - Could it be just the fact that the car is new and still burning off odd bits of residue? - the answer is that that is exactly what is happening. The 'passive' burning off of the particles of soot/ash collected in the DPF. I am told that the smell will diminish on each successive regeneration.

Hope this helps to reassure you.
