Norn Iron Newbe!

Featured Replies

Hi there names sharvy and as you can see new to this site, live in south belfast and it's pouring with rain at the minute! Nothing new there then. I have a 2001 Fabia 1.4mpi with 99k miles. I have been searching the site for a set of instructions to replace the timing chain as mine is clattering and sounds more like a diesel than a 1.4 petrol. I looks simple enough, removal of the timing cover and sump line up the timing and remove both the cam and crank sprockets - or am i being to simplistic?

Anyway - nice meeting you all!

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hi wee up-date re the timing chain. Took off the alternator belt, inner wheel arch cover, removed the rocker cover disconnected the bottom water hose running under the sump, removed the sump, this let me remove the timing cover. Put the car in 5 th gear and used the wheel to turn the engine over and line up the timing with the exhaust and inlet valves rocking on No4 cylinder. Removed the oil pump drive and remove the crank and cam sprockets.

I had to order the parts, 2 sprockets, timing chain, timing cover gasket, timing cover oil seal and a tube of instant gasket for the supm joint. Cleaned everything down and put the timing cover gasket onto the engine block and replaced the timing cover iol seal before i put the cover on. To ensure the timing is correct, you will notice a "dot" on the cam and cranck wheel - there needs to be 12 chain link rollers between the dot on the crank and the dot on the cam.

Reassembled in the same order , changed the oil and filter and started first turn - the difference with the new chain is fab - it's running like a mouse chewing paper!! Hope this helps others the same problem.

Cheers
