Knockhill in Scotland

Featured Replies

Anybody ever been to Knockhill in Scotland for one of their driving days?

I received Token for a combined birthday & christmas pressy which allows me to chose a half day on one of the following :

MG & Racing Car Experience,

Rally Driving Experience,

Legends Experience

or On Road Advanced Course.

And I wondered what anybody did or what they would recommend....

Ta.

If i had the choice i'd go for the Advanced Driving.

Much more use in the long term.

Oh dear, I notice your birthday is just before Crimbo, so you therefore recieve a combined pressie. ;)

As Geoff says, the advanced driving tuition would be more benificial for every day advantage, unless you're thinking of doing a bit of motorsport p'raps? :P

I think they use sported up Sierra Saphires (4x4?) for the Rally experiences at Knockhill.

I was given one of the Red Letter days Rally Driving Experiences at knockhill for Christmas 2003!! Still to book it, I've got until Feb this year to book it up. Should be fun :D

Hi,

I did the MGf and single seater thing in August. It was okay but your time in the cars is limited and the bit with the instructor in the MGf is pretty much well a waste of time.

Unfortunately it ****ed down on my day so, while it was a challenge to keep the car on the track, it did spoil the day a bit. That said I still enjoyed and would like to try it in the dry (which is a total lottery at Knockhill).

I would not advise the advanced driving necessarily as a life experience (I am fortunate to have a job where this course in mandatory so not much use to me). It might be interesting (and certainly worthwhile) but you could probably get the same experience by going on a police driver awareness course or contacting your local Institute of Advanced motorists.

Save the token for a blast round the track!!

Regards

I would definately not reccomend the rally course.

I got one as a gift a couple of Christmas's ago - and whilst the day was fun, the actual wheel time was really quite disapointing. They do encourage you to push the car tho...

But that is the problem. Nowhere else in the country is still using 2.0 Sierras as their rally cars, and I was expecting an old scooby at the very least. The cars are to slow for any tail out fun.

My vote would be with the advanced driving...

Despite folks inputs I've booked the MG and Single seater session for tomorrow, hope the weather stays dry. Will update folks with my thoughts on my return tomorrow night.

Enjoy it, I just left an hour ago and it was p****g down but looks better for tomorrow. Also get your name down for the Starperformance track night on the 9th June 6-8pm 2 hours in your own car, you won't regret it already 4 Fabias on the list.

The problems with these is that they are only supposed to be taster's. Its not a practise session for a race! I did the MG and single seater course a few years ago which was good. I'd never been on track or knockhill in a car so the MG bit helped to learn the track. Track time is limited, you dont get long.

But it did convince me to do several hot hatch days.

The off road driving course is quite good, there are typically two of you taking turns in an Isuzu Trooper for about 2 hrs including the safety briefing.

I was lucky enough to get a free "Toyota on Track" day a couple of years back, they let us loose in Celicas and MR2s (with and instructor), that was a blast.

Skid pan session anyone ?

I had a voucher for the Rally experience at Knockhill. Although it was fun, I don't feel like I gained anything from it, there were too many people and not enough time in the cars in my opinion. The instructors taught very little about HOW to drive, but just said which way to point the car and when to brake etc, one time he told me to boot it while still coming out a bend causing the car to almost spin...like I say - fun but not very worthwhile.

...On the other hand :D

A week later I went to the VAG Trackday school at Knockhill, and the instructors (some of whom were the same guys from the Rally experience) were first class. Thought they were really down to earth, good guys and passed on a lot of good information and tips for driving the circuit. Couldnt be more helpful.

I would highly recommend signing up for the next VAG StarPerformance track night. Any reservations you have about someone bumping you etc should be forgotten, everyone there are enthusiasts and everyone knows not to do silly things or take risks. Its going to be a really good night....especially if your in a Furby VRS ;)

C'mon then Monty how did it go ?

Great, super, fantastic, I want to do it again....

Heavy showers driving up there, arrived about 2:30 and track was drying out nice, by time been through briefing the sun was out and it was a lovely day.

Three laps at the wheel of and under instruction in an MG ZR160, where to turn when to change up/down and when to brake. Then two laps as passenger with instructor basically showing off, one really fast lap and one showing me what not to do and taking it side ways a few times, great fun.

Then it was into the single seater formula first, wait for the green light and go, first lap a bit slowly to get used to the setup, lap two a bit faster, and then on lap three I pushed that wee bit too hard and spun it - now that was scary. Ended up pointing the right way so continued on and passed a couple of the folks out in the ZRs for their instruction laps, that was a good feeling.

My impression, good setup, well organised, first rate driving experience, and I would recommend it to anybody ( the weather helped though - the folks in the morning session got soaked seemingly ). :):):):):):)

Sounds great, now get your name down for the 9th June, lets make it 5 Fabias.
