Can I add an amp to a Bolero

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have just picked up my new Octavia vRS FL, and I have the bolero HU, I have checked and I can not find any info.

1) Can I add an amp to the Bolero HU

if not

2) Which aftermarket HU can I add to the Octavia without adding a extra trim piece

Thanks

Don't think you can add an amp to that headunit.

Most headunits are din size so you will probably need the trim piece if you swap headunit out.

You can add a Blaupunkt "plug and play" amplifier and harness.

I have one attached to my Yeti Bolero - drives an active sub under the passenger seat. All without cutting a wire.

Not cheap - got mine off ebay - they do crop up now and again.

I would be interested in a few more details if you don't mind, having recently got a Yeti.

I have a Blaupunkt THb200A active sub which I removed from my previous Fabia, but am interested particularly in what cable/adaptor I need to connect it up as you mention without cutting any wires (was fairly easy to connect in the Fabia, being ISO connections) - is it the £80 wiring adaptor listed on the Bluespot website?

Also where to get a live supply from for it as access through the bulkhead to the battery seems particularly tricky.

Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Yes, you can use a line to RCA convertor or better still, a quadlock plug to RCA out. I bought one but didn't remove the headunit to actually check it fits, but it should.

No decent head unit on the market in the same shape as the Bolero. You can get the trim set with cage easily from Skoda directly as a spare part.

Before you decide to change the Bolero consider the integration with other systems in the car. I have bluetooth, steering controls, maxidot, dual zone climate control, optical parking, all of which use the Bolero as the main display. If I ever change the Bolero it will only be to the Columbus..

I am just about to Fit the Blaupunkt THA 475 PNP to my 2010 FL octavia vrs, I have ordered the PNP loom from Bluespot and am going to fit the amp under the front passenger seat along with a small modified ISO Loom I have made to provide a take off for an amp in the boot to drive a Sub.....I will post some photos and a how to when fitted.

you can add an amp to any hu without pre outs. simply add a hugh to low converter

In mine the headunit goes to the pnp amp, which then routes to the normal speakers. Sub gets connected to the phono line out for l/r signal feed. For power, as only an active sub, I connected via a fused spur to the fuse box next to the steering wheel (10 amp fuse fitted - just in case ! - 20 amp on the subwoofer itself).

Thanks for your help

I have checked, there are 3 HUs that I could get, 1) I need to get the columbus trim piece.

Zenec 5600 - Mixed views, mainly bad

Kenwood 520VBT, skoda dealer only, Bad - Ipod connected via the front, will not interface with climate control.

Alpine INE S900R - Alpine trim piece, £1000+

Or get a Columbus and no amps = extra for USB connector

What to do?

Are you saying that on the PNP amp that the Phono Line outs are live when the amp is fed from the Speaker level inputs? if so that's interesting as I was going to use a spliced cable on the rear speaker level inpu and feed the sub amp from that via its speaker level inputs, if that's the case it makes life a lot easier as I have 2 very expensive 5 meter double shielded phonos sat in a box from my last install doing nothing, in effect daisy chaning the amps one from the other, what channel are the line outs linked to ( for controlling bass level / volume of the attached sub?

I have the PNP loom, that passes through the amp. The phono feeds are live (I use these to feed a signal to my powered sub). I only have a 2 channel amp, so fronts are amped, whilst rears are not. My amp has a remote for controlling gain/volume.

Cheers,

The loom is used to provide a feed to the pnp amp, then this output gets pushed back into the original speaker wiring. Really easy to do.

If you use the pnp amp and loom, it provides a switched feed to the amp automatically (and therefore a "wake up" feed to the powered sub).

As the powered sub is pretty low powered, I used an "add a circuit" (http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/715) to tap into a permanent live feed from the fusebox next to the steering wheel. Preferably I would wire direct to battery, but as you say bulkhead is not the easiest.

Thanks for the info, think I understand - something for me to look at after Christmas when I can stretch my finances to the PnP Amp and wiring adaptor.

Theres several of the PnP Amps listed on the Bluespot website, which model have you got?

EDIT: Having looked at the specs in more detail, I'm guessing its the THA475 as thats got the 4 speaker inputs and outputs, plus the two RCA outputs which I can use to drive the THb200A Active Sub - better start saving now as I don't think Santa can stretch to that much :D

Cheers,

I actually got a 275 (now discontinued ?) off ebay - £50 I think. Worth keeping your eye on.
