Power steering cuts off during driving!

Featured Replies

This started the other day; during (spirited) cornering, or manuvering at low speed, the power steering turns off, I get the PS, ABS and ASR icons flashing and beeping on the dashboard.

What is also interesting is that the engine idle speed starts moving around every few seconds, the clock and odometer resets, and the dials start to vibrate?!?! I don't experience the headlights flickering (although I have the stock xenons fitted), as reported here http://tinyurl.com/38n9xqs

At first I thought it was a loose accu connection, but the clamps are solid as a rock, and I couldn't really find the power steering fuse on the fuse card that is on the fuse cover...

The car is a Fabia RS 2005., and the whole steering rack, steering pump, lines and hydraulic liquid is brand new, not even 10kkm/1 year on them. I must mention that during "normal" driving, everything is A-OK, but only under load (be it in a corner, or parking around), everything goes to **** :(

Has anyone had similar issues, or has a clue? Thnx!

Sounds like a duff battery to me

Whilst driving it can also be the power steering sensor starting to fail. It was how mine started to go - Just the odd blip whilst driving, but blips became "moments" and eventually moments turned into no PAS at all. :) Vagcom can confirm if it is that though. If not, battery as mentioned above. :)

Yeah, the battery is the same age as the car, but I only have ~71kkm, and the car was always garaged, so the battery is still decent, altho I wouldn't say great, it did have it's lows this winter, and lately I've noticed that even turning on the turn indicators or listening to the stereo a bit louder makes the whole dash flicker... Hmm... even when parking in the garage turning the wheel makes all rear lights dim, good point I hope!

In the mentioned thread, the accu replacement didn't help :/

Ah yes, I forgot to mention the simple turn off/turn on the car again resolves the problem for a period of time...

Will borrow an accu (already have a donor in sight :)), and see if it helps.

I'd appreciate more opinions ;)

Battery for sure. PAS can take 60 AMPS.

Problem solved, it was a weak battery after all, changed it and now after 1000km everything works great!

Altho the dashboard lights still flicker when I click the turn indicator, or when parking and moving the steering wheel... But it doesn't bother me as long everything works flawlessly like it does now :)

I agree, any Battery over three to four years is a Bonus!. Dont forget it is a living Chemical item which has a life
