car detail

Featured Replies

hey, on friday past i washed polished and waxed my car. fortunatley it didn rain the rest of the day so the next day i applied a spray detailer which gives extra wax protection:) iv applied the spray detailer every day since friday as it removes dirt dust and grime and gives the car a deep glossy shine even for a silver car it looks great :) the car looks as great as it did on friday :) just was wondering is it ok to apply multiple layers? of the spray that is? it wouldn remove the polish and wax that id applied previously.? i think that the detailer just adds an additional coat so im hoping it keeps the elements away from the polish and wax layers to provide a long lasting deep shine :) also in a few months time i want to clay the car, ive heard that you need to be careful not to marr the paintwork? what is this and how is it done? more importantly how do i avoid it?

also when applying the polish i always rub the paintwork with the back of my hand to feel how soft it is lol and it was very soft after applying the polish :) but then after applying the wax layer it removed some of the "softness" ? is this normal? i was worrying that it had removed some of the polish?

You'd only repeat the clay stage if you want to remove the polish/sealant/wax layers and start afresh really. Or if it's clear that there's bonded contaminents that have attached themselves to the paintwork - fallout from acid rain, tar spots etc.

Clay procedure: generally marring will occur when you're not using enough lubricant on the paint, while using a piece of clay. With many, you use a spray/quick detailing spray, but with others (like Bilt Hamber) water can be used. So top tip is to keep the paint wet on the section you're working on, so that the clay is able to move freely without sticking or stopping on the paintwork. That's usually where the marring marks come from.

On the polish 'feel', it depends what you've used really. IME after the polishing stages the paint can feel quite 'squeaky'. Then the feel of the paint improves with sealant applied and finally mirror smooth when the wax layers have been done.

With a spray detailer, just make sure that you're not rubbing dirt/dust into the paint when using it - make sure you're using enough. To be honest, I only use a product like that after a normal wash (when I know the car is clean) or perhaps at a show or when removing something very specific from the paintwork that I've spotted, like bird muck or fingermarks when out and about. But again, make sure you're using enough of the product to stop anything being worked into the paint and potentially scratching it.

Hope this helps,

Steve
