xenon life

Featured Replies

Evening people,

Since the darker nights and mornings have started to make a return, I have noticed that my xenons are pretty poor, well in comparison to what I though of

them last year.

I've read that xenon burners loose some effectiveness, so I'm wondering i I need to replace the bulbs.

I know it had a bulbs before I got the car, when exactly I'm not sure, but I bought with just over 60K and I'm now approaching 100K.

If new bulbs will help, where is the best place to source them and whats the best process to replace them ?

Thanks....

check that your self-levelling is working. I thought mine had gone all dull, then I realised that one of my motors was stuck in the "low" position.

Thanks, you were spot on... the self leveling ain't working at all !

When I start the engine the beams give a slight judder as though they are trying to level out, but something is preventing it.

Any ideas what to look for, I have vagcom, but sadly I have no means of plugging this in as someone took my laptop away :-(

On the mk1, (I assume that the mk2 is the same?) the levelling is active when you first switch on the ignition, NOT when you switch on the lights. When you checked, how did you do it?

Each headlight assembly has a motor inside it which adjusts the headlight position based on the level sensors, front and back. It's not unknown on the mk1 for these motors to either stick or fail completely. How old is your car?

If both headlights are not working, then I would look at the level senders. IIRC they are based on the near side suspension arms. Have you had any work done in that area lately? I seem to remember another member had their sender put on upside down by a Skoda dealer of all people!!! If you can get a local member to hook up VAGCOM for you, I guess you should be able to look at what's coming back from the level senders.

Edit:- I didn't read your post properly - if it was one motor juddering I'd think it was just a stick motor - but for both to be doing it is odd. Maybe some more knowledgable members can think of other suggestions?

HTH, good luck! emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I think the MK2 only self level once you've turned on the lights, mine always do a little dance when I first turn them on :D

Mines a mark 2. although an early one.

I tend to think if both lights are doing the same, then its maybe not the motors.

Is the connection to the lights just a multi connector, i.e the lights wouldn't work if the connector wasn't connected, or is the leveling on a separate connector ?

Did have a major job done at a VW dealer (Skoda approved service agent) in the summer. Brake servo unit, but they said it was an engine out, so I'm wondering

if the lights were removed to do this job and something wasn't plugged back in.

I'll have a look at the leveling sensors at the weekend if I can.
