Repairing scored alloys

Featured Replies

My Superb is only one month old and I have done what I have never done with any car before - scored the alloy wheel against a kerb. My previous Passat's alloys did not stick out past the tyre and I'm just used to parking so close to the kerb that I didn't think about my Thermistos. Very annoying indeed. :(

Has anyone had good experiences with any mobile alloy repair outfits? I'm in Glasgow. Would rather they popped out to our house rather than me going to them. I'm assuming they carry all the necessary gear to do just as good a job at one's house as in their workshop.

Much obliged.

It really depends on how bad it is , often the only solution is a proper refurb

Which alloys are they?

If they are Thermisto or Luxon Elegance wheels, they need to be polished out and re-lacquered, but i have been told that you will never get the same finish, as it is a "Diamond Cut" finish, rather than painted or polised...

... if it's a Normal paint finish, it should be easier to match.

I have Thermistos.

Thanks for the link. It states £70+vat for each wheel, which seems pricey compared to the new cost of £160. I had thought I could leave it for a period of time (say a year) before replacing with a new one, but I suppose there's the risk the wheels won't match (3 used ones vs one new one), or even that they're discontinued.

If I ignore the scratches then I might just leave it full stop. It has no impact other than visual.

you'll be looking at more than £70 to repair a Thermisto - as it is NOT a painted finish... and it'll have the "Lines" buffed out before lacquering, so they will never match...

(If you look at the wheel, there are lines running round the entire wheel on each spoke - this indicates they were "Diamond Cut" before lacquering...)

The link above does state they can refurbish Diamond Cut alloys, so I would expect the refurbished wheel would look identical (as close as anyway) compared to the original. However, as you say, the cost will likely be higher than £70+vat. I will decide once I have seen their quote.

I actually used an agent from ChipsAway and was charged £50 each for a set of alloys on my old Octy but I hear very good things about Wicked Wheels. The snow last winter didn't help my wheels or my driving ;-)
