Carburettor Removal

Featured Replies

hi

please give me a hint on how to remove the carburettor from the intake manifold.

I managed to unscrew only 2 of the 4 Inbus screws that protrude that ruber/steel flange and screw into intake manifold.

the other 2 screws (see photo of my very dirty carb) are towards the engine firewall (the red arrows) and are a pain in the butt to reach and unscrew.

my only guess is that carburettor was first screwed into intake manifold prior mounting the latter... and Haynes manual lacks any info about removal. which sucks big time.

so guys, any ideas, please ? and if you have any other advice for phase 2 (a thorough cleaning), common mistakes, watchouts or nono's please share in here.

cheers

I've no specific experience of Jikovs, but hopefully my general experience of GM Varajets, Solexs and Webers (removal and installation) and servicing SUs and Webers will help.

It's quite common for downdrafts like these to be secured to the inlet manifold by 4 nut and stud fixings, one at each corner of the carburetor mounting flange (and on the corners of a common set of dimensions; it used to be very common to replace the GM or Solex with a Weber for reliability and economy as well as power. In fact Weber UK sold conversion kits which included a brand new Weber, ready jetted for the engine, and any brackets, linkages and air filter adapters you required for the replacement). Anyway, to access the engine side securing studs you might well require a 30degree ratchet spanner (so called because a 30degree movement makes the ratchet clock) or an obstruction spanner.

When servicing a carb, before starting, make sure you have a gasket set (or service kit) for the correct make and model of carburetor. When stripping it down, be methodical, and make sure you know where the parts you've removed came from, and how to put them back.

ok, I got it...

I was trying to remove the whole carburettor from the intake manifold at once, but you have to remove first the top part, then the bottom part and finally the rubber/metal flange.
