snapped spring!

Featured Replies

I was taking my girlfreind to the hospital for the last check up before my baby is born went round a corner and BOINGGGGGG!!!

I thought it waas odd but had an appointment to keep so carried on at 30mph and on every right hand corner (including 4 roundabouts??) BOINGGGGGG!!! :S

After the hospital took it to the nearest kwik fit (as they are open on sundays and not becouse i would normally!!!) and the bloke said i had snapped a spring :o and that i was lucky not to done a lot more damage when i kept on driving it?

So i left it there and they are fitting two new springs for £208.65!!

IVE HAD BETTER SUNDAYS!!! :giggle:

Make sure they fit vRS ones, as they are very different to the standard Octavia springs.

im pretty sure they will fit the wrong springs

and this problem is very common wont do any damaged as the spring cant go anywhere if on the front and would just need replacing asap by a proper garage

how will i know if the wrong springs are fitted?? as i left my car there for the work to be done tomorrow when im at work??

According to Eurocarparts & GSF the correct VRS springs are main dealer only so ask where Kwikfit they got them from. I was quoted £69 + vat each last week from Trade Part Specialists ( VAG part supplier).

If the gap between the top of the tyres & the wheel arch is larger than the rear they've fitted the standard Octavia springs. Gap should be about the same if they fitted VRS springs.

£208 inc VAT? sounds a bit cheap if they are fitting the correct VRS Springs (£148+vat a pair)

It should be easy to spot then as its the front ones they are doing so they should be the same gap as the rears??

Yes gap should be about the same. Unusual for front springs to break. I've had a rear spring break on my old Golf mkiv Anniversary & on my wife's Bora.

Dunno the prices for front springs, but wouldn't have thought there would be much difference to what I was quoted for rears.

There have been a number of posts on here about Octavia front springs snapping.

I agree. My wallet screamed in agony when the dealer gave me the cost of a spring. No where online did OEM vRS ones either so I had to pay it.

time for coilovers! :D

Just picked it up and the front gap does look different to the back gap, and when i asked him about it telling him what i have read on here he said it will take about a week or two for them to 'settle' down? :S

Is that right?

Also on the invoice it says: part number:- QTA2977

desciption:- octavia 1.9 9805 FS

If anyone could find out if they are the right ones i would be VERY grateful??

Umm,

If the gap is bigger than the back it looks like they've fitted the wrong springs. I've never heard of springs settling down after a week or 2.

Part number isn't VAG, & description Octavia 1.9 9805 FS doesn't sound right at all.

Take it back, as they havent fitted the correct ones. Thats not good.

I would get them changed for the correct ones mate my vrs is on std suspension and sits level and springs should not settle over 2 weeks from fitting (unless they are really rubbish)

you could do with some ride height measurements for the vrs from skoda or somwewhere for proof

It's definately the wrong spring. The one they fitted is for a Mk.1 1.9 TDi.

You might find that Kwik Fit try to claim that whilst it is not identical, it is suitable. I've seen this several times before.

Get the email address for your local dealer and ask "Is a Mk.1 1.9 TDi front spring safe to use on a VRS?"

The dealer will answer no. Take the reply into Kwik Fit .

not suprised lol would have bet my house and my right testical they would get it wrong its kwickfit for a reason tyres not bad anything else i wouldnt even go there lol

you will need to replace them asap as they are the wrong ones and will not be the right height or have the right loadings and are prob cheap ****'!!!!!!!

First of all. I've seen this before.

Their description is "octavia 1.9 9805 FS" which is

Octavia

1.9 is a diesel - there is no 1.9 Petrol

9805 is 1998-2005 i.e Mk.1

FS is Front Spring

As others have said, the VRS springs are only available from VAG (dealer and maybe TPS). Whilst the above is probably the best match available at Kwik Fit, it is not the correct part.

thanks for that im phoning tomorrow to tell them to order and change them asap!!!

I wish id read this yest & i would of told you to collect your car & take it to a proper garage, the "it will take 2 weeks to settle" is typical rubbish of this chain,we have the mis-fortune to use them for the tyres on our works cars & they cant even get that right! i hope you get it sorted but i think your going to be in for a fight with them.

Yeah I agree, I think you're going to be in for a fight with Kwiksh*t.

I suggest that you get down to your local Skoda dealer & ask them to confirm that springs for a 1.9 98/05 are not correct for your car. Armed with that evidence demand that Kwiksh*t put the correct parts on FOC.

  • 2 weeks later...

Did you get this sorted out?

Yeah, I was wondering what happened with this too.

havent been back yet as i have become a dad for the first time since having them fitted :thumbup:

but the gaps seem to be a bit more even but still not right, so i will be going back maybe next week depending on baby duties!!!! ;)

UPDATE...

I took the vrs back to kwik fit this evening and spoke to the manager he aggrees that my car is not sitting right and and after two weeks of driving any settlement should of happened by now,

he also looked on the computer and the kwik fit parts supplier only stock the ones that were fitted, i told him that i had spoken to skoda and they said they sounded like diesel ones so he is going to speak to someone tomorrow to see if they are the right ones!!!

So i will see what he says tomorrow...

Watch this space.. :wonder:
