Cleaning alloys

Featured Replies

Hi everybody!

There is several types of alloys out there and I'm wondering how hard it is to keep'em clean? If you look at the Luxon 18" for an example, compared with Luna or Spectrum? The Luxon is nice, but not dirty or not properly cleaned. What are yours "how to" when it comes to cleaning alloys?

My Thermisto's get a wash every week - sometimes after a thousand miles - apart from having to clean every spoke (and there are lots of them) they are not too hard to keep nice :)

Mine are washed every week..Sometimes more

You MUST apply some Wheel sealer.

This prevents brakedust build up and makes them easier to clean.

I regularly take the wheels off and wash them completely and re-apply wheel sealer

Yikes!

Thats where my problem is, the wheel design! Turbine wheels looks nice to the point where you have to clean them. Aaarghh! Do NOT like to use a toothbrush or something like it for every spoke, that takes to long. But to remove'em every now and then seems to much, at least for me. I admire them who finds the time and energy to keep that work up. The the sealer trick looks all right, that could make my living somewhat easier, thanks for the tip!

That's why I chose Lunas because they are so much easier to keep clean and you can get a decent size sponge through to the inside between the spokes allowing you to keep the interior of the wheel clean without the chore of jacking the car up all the time .

Same here but alarmingly my dealer has reported both back wheels are buckled on my car!! I wonder if there is an issue with Lunas

I chose Lunas because:

1) I liked the look of them.

2) I thought they suited the car better.

3) I thought they made a bigger statement than the standard wheels.

4) I thought they would be easier to clean.

I am pleased with my choice and I haven't had any problem with buckling as yet.

Has it been checked though?? ,Its on the inside apparently i can see no damage on the outside nor is there any problems with the wheels as far as i can tell

Did the buckled wheels not cause shuddering or vibration?

Got me quite worried... I have encountered a few potholes over the last year..(As has everyone probably if you live in the UK)

I've just cleaned the wheels on SWMBO's Octavia and took them off one by one. There were flecks of brake pad material embedded into the paint. Used a plastic card (actually an old door pass) with neat car shampoo as a lubricant and they cleaned up fine without scratching. Applied a couple of coats of Chemical Guys wheel guard so lets see how they do this winter!

Get a wheel brush makeshift it easy

I live quite near Bingley, could you come and do mine, Fabia and Octavia?

I recently took part in my own experiment - I cleaned the Thermistos with Autoglym wheel cleaner and dried, then put Autoglym super resin polish on!

Worked a treat when I came to clean them again two weeks later - silky smooth and all the muck gone, no effort at all!

When I see here how much time ppl invest in cleaning their alloys I am really wondering why always creme leather is the pain in the ass (which it isnt.)

For alloy rims protection I use a turbo jet spray with liquid wax. The same wax I use every week to seal and to protect the body. The brake pad powder will be separated from the alloy metal and will not adhere due to galvanic isolation ensured by the wax coat. Easy to wash and to maintain clean. My OEM rims are Trifid 17" and aftermarket Dezent RK 16" and look as brand new .

I have Luna alloys fitted to my Superb Elegance and hit a pothole on the way home on my first trip in the car. Wrote off the front nearside wheel and tyre with big dent on inside rim (only had 37 mls on the clock of which I had done 17!). I didn't see the pothole at all and I hit it at about 50 mph so it took a real crack. Hope to get the car back Monday evening (24th Jan 11) and start to enjoy the car. I hope the Luna wheel doesn't have an inherent weakness. I chose them specifically for ease of cleaning and to be different from the 'standard' fitment.

There is some members with them, who say they are easily buckled, and may have a weakness... :wonder: suppose it's never been proven, and if you havent already, get a photo of the hole, with a measure in it, and send it to the council - worth giving it a try!

I use Valet Pro Bilberry cleaner followed with Poorboys wheel sealant on my Themistos and black alloys.

Works a treat.
