ABS issue after brake work

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just joined this forum as I need help identifying and rectifying a fault that I have most likely caused on my girlfriends 2002 Fabia 1.4 Classic.

Here goes on what I did, its worth noting that I'm a qualified MC mechanic but not a car one so this may explain some of my woes.....

The car needed new discs and pads as the GF had worn them down to the metal backing, this is what I did in order;

Went to car parts shop and bought disks and pads - shop werent 100% sure what pads I needed so ended up with some with a sensor cable / plug attached.

On a freezing cold day I jacked up the car and removed the old parts.

Then like an ABS newby that I was pushed the pistons back in the calipers without doing anything else - possibly a fault from this?

Fitted pads but could not find any where to plug connector into, assumed it would be ok and tucked it out of the way - possibly a fault from this?

Put all back together but when out of curiosity unplugging what turned out to be a wheel speed sensor broke the catch part on the sensor connector - possibly a fault from this?

Turned ignition on and now have an unhealthy orange ABS light which means MOT failure :(

All help greatfully received!

I'm assuming that I have knackered the ABS pump somehow as it seems to me after doing some internet research that this is whats happened....

Thanks in advance - Ben

you could do with getting the fault codes read but could it be the sensor connection you broke that is causing the light.

Oh and I'm probably not that far from you and I have a copy of VCDS (with cheap fleabay cable) and I could check the codes for you. Where abouts are you?

I would guess it will be the connector, I think most people will just push the pistons back in?

Light most likely caused by unplugging the ABS sensor. Clear fault codes, light should go out job done. Everything else was done ok, except for working in cold weather

Thanks for the offer of the fault code test - some one has offered to do the same that Hannah knows so hopefully they will do this without having to hassle you!

If I get stuck I will give you a shout and put the kettle on :) We are located on the Chilwell / Attenborough border....

I'm hoping that it is the sensor but dont understand how this could happen as the ignition would have been switched off at the time = ??

I'll drop the wheels off tonight and have a look-see ;)

It was done when it was snowing so that shows how cold it was - and how long the ABS light has been on....

Not sure it applies to the ABS type faults but with other faults if you start the engine 10 times and it doesn't see a fault it clears the fault light.

Key must come completely out between starts.

Worked on mine when i tried pulling the pipe off the EGR to disable it - fault light showed up - reconnected the EGR, started it 10 times and the light had gone.

Will give that a go - thanks

Update: now fixed!

Thanks to Trundlenut for giving up his precious spare time to a complete stranger the fault was identified as the front left speed sensor.

One wheel removal later and it was obvious as this was the one with the broken clip which had allowed the connector to 'pop off'.

2 zip ties later and the pesky orange ABS light is now a nice shade of black B)

A big thumbs up to decent folk out there you still exist!

Ben

Zip ties, the cure to almost everything :giggle:

glad to hear its fixed, i have the same light on after replacing my offside front wheel bearing, im pretty certain i did break it to be fair. Has anyone used the cheap ebay ones as a replacement? Also I didn't know the abs light alone was a mot failure? even if the brakes are working fine? Sorry if im hijacking the post.
