Headlight motor and gearbox

Featured Replies

Morning All

Got a couple of problems I'm hoping someone can help me with...

1.

Recently took the car on a 400 mile run, at the end of it I noticed that selecting 3rd or 4th gear wasn't as easy as it should be, starts to go in but binds. It's only these two gears and doesn't always happen. Seems to be less of an issue when the car is cold. Actuating the gearbox from within the engine bay using that great casting lump that stick up, everything seems smooth and well.

2.

The adjuster motor for the left headlight is faulty, might well have been since I acquired the car. It is continually trying to wind the headlight, luckily further than the highest setting which means it doesn't cause a problem. has anyone heard of this before, can they be fixed or is it a new adjuster unit and be done with it?

Thanks

Tom

Hi,

Failure of the headlamp adjuster motor is not unheard of. Some members have fixed theirs with a bit of "percussive maintenance", replacing it is the best option long term. If you have Xenon headlights the motor retails for £50 inc vat from Skoda. If you have halogens it's a different/cheaper motor apparently.

Cheers,

Martin

There happened to be a Octavia in the local knackers yard the other day, so I swiped the actuator that has the white plastic saddle on it and replaced this, slapping some grease on the two shafts. Made pretty much no difference as far as I can make out.

When I did the engine oil at the end of the 400 miles I checked the gearbox oil because there appeared to be a little leakage around the VW plate on the bottom, when I took the bung out nothing came out, so I stuck a drop in, enough for it to start dripping slowly.

Looking at a couple of posts it seems that the lines from the gear lever can cause issues, but seem to generall be in 1, 2 and 5, not 3 and 4. Tempted to give the Haynes reset a shot unless anyones got any other ideas?

Sadly no one has had the decency to scrap an Octavia with the same headlight motor as mine, guess I'll have to keep checking or get one off eBay, if I can find one.
