oil catch tank

Featured Replies

alright geezers, have any of you rally boys got an oil catch tank on your car? i keep getting being chucked out the breather under heavy acceleration and wide open throttle so i want to chuck a catch tank in somewhere.. where's the best place to put it?

obvisouly it would be better iif it's mounted up as high as possible, i was thinking about using that hole in the top of the little flap with the chassis number stamped on on the drivers side suspension dome to bolt a bracket in there somehow..

any pics for inspiriation would be handy..

tom, the iron block motors are rubbish for it the breather take off is too low in the block, the trick is to make a breather in the cam box too and tee it into the main pipe so it can breathe better without forcing oil up the pipes.

my rally car had one tucked up under the wing by the door hinge...

sorry no pics tho

or you can fit a large can onto the vertical bit of pipework so that any oil gets to there and then allows the gasses to pass onwards and the oil can run back (think of it like a silencer box but vertical allowing expansion of the oil/gasses) I am in the middle of doing this to my 1.6 road rally car

that's a good idea jimbo, i have a spare rocker cover somewhere, i drill and weld a short piece of 19mm ally pipe into the top of the rocker cover (not as easy as an 8v one because there is more obstructions) then block off the one of the back of the engine block with a piece of plate...

ebay linky

been checking out ebay and this looks kinda like the sort of thing i'm after...

see pic below, yes i know it's very pikey and far from ideal but it was the only way i could think of plumbing in the cold air feed and warm air collector without using silly amounts of hoses and pipework, i'm using the 16v polo airbox purely as 'pipework' to join it all togther and i've removed the filter from it, the standard felicia airbox contains the air filter element... with the breather pipe(top left disconnected i oil spurted out on top of the engine... i think what i'll do is fabricate a nice aluminium intake duct to go from felicia airbox then into the throttle body via a 90 degree elbow, i'm certain that polo airbox is robbing me of power it's very restrictive inside, then i'l deal with the crankcase breather like i said above and leave it venting to atmosphere from the top of the catch tank.. what you reckon jimbo?

that catch tank looks good mate but i would be very concerened if i ever found anything stuck to the magnetic drain plug lol

i would defo be binning the polo air box could you not get the AEE one to fit over the tb?

no the air elbow intake thing from the aee engine does not fit, on those the throttle body in in the centre, on the 16v engines it still faces upwards but it's on the right hand end of the manifold, plus the 16v throttle body is much larger (63mm OD with 60mm throttle plate)

ha i must admit i did think it was pointless using a magnetic drain plug too

oh Tom i forgot to say.

the later octavias (and polo/golf i guess) with the 100bhp 1.6 engine have a lovely adaptor that fits where the oil cap goes and has a breather pipe from it, they are about 2 inches tall

might make life easier to get it breathing

ah ha.. stange you mention that!!.. i've got a few odds and sods knocking around from the crossflow 8v engines and i saw one of those and gave it a try on top of the 'ole gal, sadly it fouls on the bonnet with it on there

thanks for that.. that looks like it could be near perfect for what i need, by the looks of it there is a non-return valve which is attached to it too which might be of some use
