Doomed PD injector wiring harness

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Been talking to dealer and a family friend who's very good with car's have both said the problem is with your injector wiring harness.

Apparently wiring goes brittle and starts to break down. Comes on when engine is hot and does not always show a fault light on dash.

£79 inc VAT for the 170PD loom.

Anyone else had this prob??

Changed quite a few of them over the years, for both injector and glow plug issues.

I have about three spare PD (1.9 PD130/150) injector wiring looms :D You just never know :D

Just before I traded my RS in, at 142tkm I had that problem.

According to the dealer either the loom broke and caused a short cut that killed one of the PD elements or the PD element caused the loom to break.

In my case also the ECU was killed.

It came as a total surprise. Car just died on a junction, started once more and died than after 50 meters. Enough to let the car roll to the side of the street.

Engine was dead, couldnt be started anymore. They had to pick the car up.

Soon after the repair (around 100km after) a new problem occured, the exhaust temp sensor died. Could still drive the car, but it didnt deliver any power anymore. Enough to get back to the dealer though.

They changed the sensor and everything went well for the next 6000km, than the exhaust pressure sensor went crazy.

I was so fed up with this (as I have to drive around 1000km a week) that I bought the audi.

As much as I give dealers the benefit of doubt and play devils advocate that smacks of blanket diagnosis. Probably got an injector fault, maybe open circuit or short to earth/positive. Could be anything on the injector circuit, so ECU, loom or injectors. So replace all of them and problem sorted.

Wiring loom in head, Ive seen this a few times and we always change the loom, the problem is the loom sits in the head and gets covered in oil which obviously gets bloody hot after a run and eventualy causes the loom to break down, a dodle to fit and you will need to get the fault code cleared after fitting the new loom.

No fault codes were found when we did checked it last.

Will it always throw up a fault code?

i don't have any fault codes...or this process would have been much easier for me.

it's gradually getting worse day by day

any hints on carrying out the change? Do you agree with my synopsis ....?

Mechanic mate mentioned passat's being particulalrly bad. They also don't necessirly throw up a fault. Typical eh!

Might not throw up a fault code but i bet you could spot something looking in measure block values at injector balance.

Easy to do on the transverse cars, Superb not so much fun. Having the tool to twist the inner part of the connector into the head makes life easier but it's not essential. Be careful with the connectors on the injectors they are delicate and make sure you plug the glow plugs back in properly.

Hardest part can be getting the cam cover off in the first place.

They told me they couldnt get into the ECU to read or change the file??

First they changed the loom and the ECU but the car still didnt start. Than one of their electricians tested the PD elements and one of them was faulty.

That was what they told me.

Still have a VCDS file which I made just after the engine died.

Agree with some of the above, But we normaly see a fault code saying something like "Malfunction in injector wiring"(dont quote me as i cant remember what it actualy says) But we remove the plug at the head and pin check the wires as sometimes you can get a high resistance which would give you your running problems but mostly the fault only occurs when the engine gets some temp on it. If you are careful you can do the job without any special tools i use a small pair of pipe grips to remove and fit the connector in the head, but as Tech1e says be careful with the injector connectors, I would bet my last quid that your fault will turn out to be the head loom, and for the sake of about £70. 00 for the loom and 3/4 hours time i would go for it. Phil.

Probably best get diagnosis rather than guessing.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue, have you changed the fuel filter?

yes....at service and just over a week ago.

car seems to be ok unless on full throttle and above 2500 revs. Wiring loom has made an improvement but not

solved prob

after me test drive I read the DTC codes and car decided to show 0258

'which possibly might be
