a very poorly VRS...

Featured Replies

Hi, i've been on the forum for a long time but just recently stepped up a search for a Fabia VRS :D

So far, i've tried looking at the usual places but not finding one which suits me.

Then one came along at an auction house which is going through next week, I went to have a closer look today. Here are the auction pictures:

Seeing as its modified from the outside, I reckon it might have been someone from here?

its a YD06 done 51k. The problem is that currently the power steering light, the glow plug light and engine management lights are all on. What could this mean?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

it means dont touch with a barge pole lol

You could be lucky and it's just a knackered battery. If it was your own car and these lights suddenly appeared that's what I'd try first (well, maybe scond after having it checked on VAGCOM), but that's not really an option, so....

The power steering light could be an angle sensor (about £80) or the PAS pump (nearer £600). For the glow plug light it could be a brake light switch (under a tenner) or it could be the glow plugs themselves. Engine Management could be almost anything - does the car start and run without making howling, screeching noises and without belching out plumes of black smoke? Assuming the turbo is OK budget for the worst case and a grand should cover it. If the turbo is away too it'll cost plenty more to put right.

You could be lucky and bag a bargain, or you could be picking up the bill for someone elses problems.

It means you should get it scanned with VCDS and check it over VERY carefully. Sorry if it was anyone's here, but I wouldn't buy it on looks alone from the photo.

I saw a glimpse of it today whilst i was at the auction and searched for it online when i got home. It's going through next week so i'm going to do a bit more digging and i should be able to access the car a few days before the auction. If it doesn't start straightaway then I guess it could be a faulty battery. My previous Ibiza 130 had the power steering light come on and would rarely start but it was the alternator (around £100 to get it sorted).

Hopefully some documents will come through in terms of service history but I'll be able to check all the usual turbo, gearbox, clutch and general engine stuff. I want it because its got full leather! lol :)

glow plug light could be for something as simple as a broken brakelight swicth on the pedal. But could be worse. CEL could be any NUMBER of reasons. Honestly, the only way to get any kind of reassurance on this is to do a scan with vagcom. Ultimately the fact a light is on means absolutely nothing apart from "something" is wayward.

right the day came but they withdrew the VRS from the sale :( oh well... fast forward a week and i've just bought another from an auction today :D

its a 2005 VRS with 98k. Skoda SH upto 60 but then its patchy... it was chucking out black smoke when accelerating hard and that put many people off.. but not me! :D

I'm hoping its something simple, picked it up dirt cheap but it needs a few hundred spending on it to bring it back upto mint. Needs MOT/tax, some body repair, servicing etc. Got around £1k to spend on it now :)

Any ideas what the smoke could mean? and how to get rid of the stains on the seats.. they've gone black (thats how bad it is).

boost leak would be first check for me.....

1) Have a look at the air filter.

2) Check if any tuning box or resistor mods or other suspicious gubbins lurks under the bonnet.

3) Could also be a boost leak but at that mileage could be gunked up inlet, oily intercooler, all of the previous.

4) Seats: There's a guide lying around somewhere showing how to remove the seat covers... http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/154853-fabia-vrs-seat-cover-removal/

I've got Virosol I've used to remove the worst of oil stains and other crap from my seat backs but you always get water marks or less noticable stains. I think I'd remove the covers and soak in a solution of degreaser, then stick them through the washing machine and dry them out on the line. Could then try scotchguarding them before/during refitting.

Can I asked how much you payed for it?

Also I hope its just something easy to fix like a boost leak or a dodgy remap/tuning box.

Thanks for the list vindaloo. I checked the engine bay and one of the pipes had some dodgy tape stuck around it, it looked very botched. Going to pick it up tomorrow morning, will be dropped off to a friends garage for a proper look and the MOT.

Cost just over £2700 but I expect that figure to rise quite quickly! :|

What is that sticker on the rear window never understeer :)

I'd guess at 'never underestimate Skoda' for the sticker.

For £2,700 you coulda got a fully functioning Polo GTi ;)

yeah thats not the Furby that I've bought, I just carried on from the same topic lol

I do have a soft spot for Polo GTI's but I need a diesel! :(

I've marked the pipe that was botched with tape in the picture below, any idea what it does?

Nothing, its just the intake pipe for the airbox, wont affect running at all emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Same as me sadly, as I love the car.

Pretty sure that's the pipe that takes the air from the outside world into the airbox. Part of the PD160 mod would replace it I believe. The airbox being the 4 sided box just behind the battery.

That's a Seat Cupra intake pipe connecting to its trumpet (on/in the slam panel)... At that point there's no pressure or boost, it just guides the air down to the airbox. So that's not the problem causing the black smoke.

J.

Is it constantly throwing out black smoke or only when you put pedal to floor?

Constant = probable boost leak

Flat Out = possibly remapped/hasn't been run for a while/needs a good run

yep thanks for all help, the garage said it was the pipes from the intercooler to the turbo, someones been at it before and done a very botched job, basically it needs new pipes.

the really bad news is the power steering does not work (the light is not on), so i guess its the pump thats gone there :(

but its my little project and hope to have it on the road by the end of next week

edit: does anyone know if any power steering pump from the range of fabias will work? or are they different for the VRS? :S
