Remote Starter Without Alarm...

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I cannot find one for love nor money - i have no need or want for an alarm, but i want a remote starter with winter coming up - can you guys recommend one?

Even better, somewhere to supply and fit in Kent - end my frustration!

You'd have to kill the immobilser to fit one, I believe most top end Clifford alarms have them but I don't know of a standalone box that does it.

To fit one to a UK car is also illegal as its an offence to leave the engine running in an unattended car. Then as Ben mentioned, you'll need to overcome the imobiliser since the car will not start without a key present in the ignition. Bypassing the immo will invalidate your insurance, or increase the premium by a considerable amount due to reduced security. Is all this really necessary, to gain maybe less than 5 minutes before the heater is hot enough to produce heat anyway.

You would want it to be integrated with a high quality alarm system. It needs to provide the the immo functionality and must shut down the engine if the alarm is triggered.

You can only use it if you are parked on your own property and even though the security itself is very good with the high end Clifford systems, you will pay increased insurance as a running car is more attractive to thieves.

Thanks for the responce guys i think i will leave it then.

Mannyo - I was thinking more about warming the car's engine through before driving than being nice and warm in the car!

No real benefit from warming the engine up. Just drive easy until the engine and oil has had a good chance to warm up, bearing in mind it will take longer to warm up than the coolant. The real benefits from remote start are to look cool, warm up your car and demist the windows and/or run the aircon in summer. I believe it's only illegal to leave the engine running if the car is on the public highway, so if it is on your driveway you should be ok.

As mentioned above I would not want a remote start done with anything other than an alarm system. A properly installed alarm should rarely if ever false. Keep it simple and perhaps just have a glass break sensor. No real need for proximity, tilt etc etc if you don't want it.

DEI 556UW is a separate box to bypass the immobiliser. I believe it has a ring to put by the ignition and a box to keep a spare key in, transmitting the immobiliser code when needed.

I would suggest to look at Viper if they are available in the UK. Viper is part of DEI, the same umbrella company as Clifford, but they will probably be cheaper than Clifford.

Pretty pointless on a diesel anyway as you need to put them under load to get some heat into them, left ticking over on the drive it would take forever to get the temperature to 'normal'. On a petrol car I can see the benefit but not diesel.
