Weird DPF behaviour

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 2008 CR vRS is giving me the fear!

Last night I got the 'Diesel Particulate Filter - Instructions' message in the display, I duly read the instructions and took the car out for a drive along the motorway, I must have done 20 minutes before turning around and coming home with the DPF light still on when I parked up. This morning the light was off.

I don't think it did a regeneration whilst I was driving as:

1) I watched the fuel economy the whole time, it never dipped (I understand that it should go low for a few minutes whilst regen takes place)

2) the DPF light was still on when I parked!

As I understand it the light should go off after a regen?

I use my car to commute to work 30 miles each way, a good proportion of which is spent at 60/70/80 on the motorway right inside the DPF's 'regeneration zone' of 1500 to 2500 RPM. I bough the car 2 months ago with 37k on the clock from a Skoda dealer, it's now just nudging up to 39k. I don't think my driving pattern is stopping the car from regenerating the filter.

On top of this, despite most days averaging over 45MPG I struggle to get more than 400 miles from a tank and I've noticed occasional blue smoke at low revs when the engine is cold and pulling away from roundabouts etc. I expect a bit of diesel smoke when the engine is working hard or at high RPM but this happens at between 1200-2000.

So, is it broken? :)

Blue smoke is oil burning, needs looking into as with a DPF you will soon get a blockage and failure. Surprised to note that you get visible diesel smoke, the DPF should stop this. After 2 years variable driving my exhaust is as clean and shiny as the day I collected it and the DPF light has never come on except on turning on the ignirion. Check your tail pipe and see the condition inside

The DPF is designed to stop the diesel smoke, my remapped diesel with DPF does not smoke at all even under full throttle. If its smoking then something is wrong, and as mentioned by the previous poster it could be oil which will be terminal for the DPF.

That's what I was worried about, I expected a little bit of smoke now and again, but was surprised to see blue smoke (even if it is only now and again) at low revs.

The car is booked in to be examined.

What about the fuel consumption, I drive it pretty relaxed and am struggling to get above 400 miles to a tank, it seems a bit low.

Car went to Skoda today for them to force a DPF regen cycle.

The DPF light has come on a couple of times in the last 10 days but didn't manage to do a regen cycle (despite driving nearly 60 motorway miles to give it a chance)

Hopefully this will fix my fuel economy problem!
