The 312mm Debate

Featured Replies

I recently went to change to the 312mm setup on the missile, on purchsing a setup i found it was just a golf 288 setup.... found this out haf way through fitting......

Been driving it around with the the 288 Discs still, but with the Calipers from the Golf as per 312 conversion.

this way it is just the carriers, Discs and pads when i do want to upgrade.

But have found just chaanging the calipers they are fantastic!!!

i would say to anyone wanting better braking with wheel clearance trouble.... just change the calipers and carrires and pads to the 288mm Golf setup.

Am i going to notice any difference with changing to 312 from what i currently have?

On a vRS, 312s will fit under the standard wheels just fine FWIW. I bet there isn't that much difference in braking power - they're the same calipers after all - but they might overheat faster if you take it on a track...

That's the biggest reason for upgrading for me, the reduction in brake fade and overheating. Give them a hammering at some point and let us know, will be interesting to see if the callipers help that.

Yea I noticed some brake fade on hard brakeing one day coming off the M20, came down the sliproad a little too keen :giggle:

What do people say to anything additonal to OEM 312mm Discs to reduce fade?

I couldn't get mine to overheat, even when I was bedding them in. But the car's never been on a track with them...

Full 312 setup + race fluid and ferrodo ds 2500 pads on oem tt disks is more brakes than you will ever need, i abused mine on a lot of trackdays and 50 ish laps of the ring(2 visits) never faded and the feel on the 312 setup is much better, on the 288's i did 3 laps of silverstone and had to slow down as i ran out of brakes completly.

Who else has tried golf calipers on the fabia setup? Im asuming you went from Fabia Calipers to the 312?

Yep straight from standard to the tt brakes

Very few I'd have thought. I'v never managed to overheat my 312's, and i'v abused them. (maybe not quite to the extent of Gary lol)

So there would be no way for me to compare

- Basic Furby setup

To

- Furby setup with Golf caliper

To

- Full 312mm setup

There is an element of this chap with the 312s:

...especially as I reckon they're easier to come by than 288s!

when they are branded as 312mm you pay well into 3 figures normally starting with a '2'

Someone has just PMd me to a link for the 288 calipers and carriers for £30!

Improved brakeing and the only change is Calipers carriers and pads.

lmost like a Stage half upgrade? :giggle:

It's all down to what the car's used for - there's no doubting they're more powerful than standard...

could we add this in as a upgrade then?

As not everyone wants BIG brakes on there fabia, they just want to improve them..... so is this not a valid upgrade?

(im not trying to justify my 312mm fail.......... honist :smirk: )

I'm going to be honest, i've never tried it so it could fail too, but stick in some race fluid and ferrodo ds 2500 pads to your set up or any 288mm setup and i think the results would be very similar to a 312 setup

there are a few here who have upgraded 288 discs and pads and the fluid RATHER than updarading to 312's

I know one which was local to me i know was running over 200bhp and never had any problems.

On the 312 side I've never had any brake fade issues with mine on road or after a day of abuse on track, while my 288s (admittedly with very little friction material left at the time) were dead after one hard stop at Castle Combe.

**EDIT**

I'm also not sure of what your 12 fail consists of! :)

you bought a 312 set up

which turned out to be a Golf 288 set up

so you changed a 288 Fabia caliper for an indentical Golf 288 one

and there was an improvement?

Or even though they normally grip the same size disc if the Golf caliper actually different?

1st of all excuse me if im being dumb here......emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

what golf calipers are we speaking off here? 1.9gttdi 130/150? and you say you are running them with the standard vrs 288mm discs? so what is actually different on the caliper? piston size?

I purchased a '312mm' setup off a brisky memeber on the understanding they where a 312mm setup.

When we fitted them they turned out to be the a golf 288 setup - i wasnt too heart broken as i now know i have the correct calipers for the 312 upgrade, just on a 288 disc and carrirer.

this was my fail.......... Purchaseing a *wink* 312mm setup *wink*

But on doing this swap i noticed an improvemnt on the stopping power of the new calipers B)

As MarkMac point out below ----------

I belive so, there looked to be a difference when compareing the 2 but did not go to the length to mesure them.

The beginning of last summer I was thinking about getting 288 carriers and using my old 288 disc with my S3 callipers. Reason was I needed new disc and still have my old ones. The main reason I upgraded in the first place was for feel not braking power. In the end just bought new oem 312 discs.

I was thinking less unsprung weight plus the ability to use 15inch rims on track with again less unsprung weight.

Anyone got a spare set of golf 288 carriers? Happy to try it :)

It's a bit more complicated than that - the 288s on the Golf use the same disc as the standard Fabia vRS, but the same caliper as the Octavia vRS (or TT, or MkV Golf GTI). Have a look at Ross (Tech1e's) TG, and the difference is obvious!

HTH

anyone know if the tt brake lines fit the fabia?

Yes they do but the little locator on the car end is 180 degrees out to the Fabia. So you either have to file it off or twist the brake pipe a little to get it in.

does 24mm make thta much difference? :wonder:

Have you asked the missus the same question?
