The 312mm Debate

Featured Replies

Have a look at Ross (Tech1e's) TG, and the difference is obvious!

Either way a search for 312mm pictorial brings it up ;)

Says nothing about the Caliper difference (piston Size)..... :wonder:

Piston size is identical 54mm iirc.

And the first picture shows the difference between the two types of caliper. I'll fix it later.

Well that is a bummer..... the only other thing i can think of apart from me being crasy, is the way the caliper floats to the carrier.....

Is the pad size different? Can't remember.

  • Author

Surface area on the pad is the same as the 312, just the 312mm have more face than a 288mm obvoiusly

Pads size and thus contact area is exactly the same.

The only difference mechanically is a larger diameter disc gives more effect as it has greater leverage.

The standard calipers are made by Lucas. The golf ones are ATE, different shape caliper and the way the mount together.

Is there a chance that will make a difference?

or am i fishing for unicorns here? :giggle:

Sorry I was asking if the pad size between the ate and Lucas callipers are the same.

Ok now im lost......... :S

The same mod is carried out on the new vRS and Cupra.

Ross, have they changed the system at all to improve pedal feel on the new vRS/Cupra?

I think the brakes on the Fabia II are better for being ATE, also the abs is a lot less invasive.

However 312/256 is sooo much better ;)
