So got my car back from being valeted today looking lush and great chuffed to bits, not an hour later park it outside my house on a slight slope handbrake slips car goes down a side of a wall need new passenger side mirror and will have to get the door sprayed! Oh how i love spending money.

Ouch! Could have been much worse though.

I always leave the car in gear just incase

Been there done that  Luckily mine chose the hedge rather than the concrete pillar that was next to it! ALWAYS LEAVE IT IN GEAR!

I never used to leave my car in gear except in extreme circumstances (1:4 hill for example). I was always nervous of me or my wife forgetting and kangarooing the car into the garage wall or something similar. However, with the requirement on my new Scout (and other VAG cars I believe) to depress the clutch before the car will even start, I'm tempted to adopt the "leave it in gear" approach.

My Bora did this on my sloped drive,

taking down my back gates in the process and was brought to

a halt by my next door neighbors house :o jammed against the wall

and now jammed on top of said gates.

I always leave it in gear now.... Always....

This runs in families...

Dad's car ran down a hill and demolished a wall (he and his brother then rebuilt).

My car ran into the back of a mates car whilst we were drinking tea in his lounge looking out at it happening. Thankfully, at the time, mk2 eScrote rear clusters were very cheap.

As already said, you should always leave it in gear. You should also always check that it's not in gear before you start the car. It's pretty basic and will save you in the future. :)

Ooppss!!!!!!1

At least you had the handbrake on - I parked my XM and forgot - it rolled about 20m across a sloping yard and hit a JCB - the latter was fine...

Yeah I think I'll leave it in gear from now on!!

If you do leave it in gear apply the handbrake first and then select gear. Make sure it doesn't load the gear up, that can cause damage.
