Skoda Fabia Classic 1.4MPi Power steering gone

Featured Replies

Not sure how, the fluid cap appears to be under the battery housing...

That's the problem...

Read in the manual that if the fluid is low, the PAS warming light will NOT come on. And it's on....

It wont if the level is low as such, but if the level is low the pump can overheat and that will bring the light on.

Sorry - I've just realised that you started this thread some time ago - and not just recently as I'd assumed from your first recent posting. Seems like you need professional advice - take it to a different garage - or even a Skoda dealer!

Just thinking, if I take it to a dealer or another mechanic, it could cost me alot, the car is probably worth £1k in perfect working order (it's a really 'no-thrills' kind of car) so taking it to professionals may out weigh just selling as is? Thoughts?

Got the same car myself (although rather modded) the system itself is fairly simple and shouldnt be to difficult to work out whats wrong.

I took it to a mechanic in Dec, and while he had it in his shop the problem did not manifest and so he said there was no problem >: (

Guess I'll try taking it to his again

I'd still want to check the level of the fluid...

If it wasn't in a retarded place I'd check it. Just read else where that it could be the motor. Earlier this year I replaced the cooling fan motor as it was corroded to hell, maybe that happened to this motor aswell?

The pump does suffer from water ingress, but unless you have someone look at it its all guess work.

I'll just point out that when this happened in my old car - stiff steering that is - I had to have a new steering rack - £600+

Yup, you said earlier :)

If mine needs a new rack, I'll just buy a new car I guess :S

I really hope that is not necessary for mine! Will give a mechanic a ring on monday, not sure how well he can diagnose though... he said earlier he'd come down and have a look, but would have thought you'd need to maybe lift the car up for a look or something. Guess I'll find out ^.^

Just an update, mechanic came by this morning and took a look. His suspicion landed on the rather knackered looking alternator that could be responsible for my speaker problem too as it's not providing enough juice when everything is on.

Shopping for an alternator now, and a thermostat. Also need to fix my damn windscreen wash leaks >: (
