Unwanted camber

Featured Replies

Basically i bought a second hand set of coils off of a guy on another forum, albeit they are for a mk4 ibiza and mine is a fabia, after doing a lot of research and being told off a big name company they will fit, something is not right!!

Basically, everything bolted together as should be, (i had to cut off a drop link due to previous bodge repair) and will have to replace this tomorrow but this shouldn't affect the camber anyway!! The offside aint too bad, but the nearside is horrendous!!

I'm thinking wrong struts, could somebody enlighten me as they were supposed to fit...

Assuming the camber etc was OK before fitment??

If so, put originals back on, and forget using what you have recently fitted??emoticon-0105-wink.gif

That is serious, something is bent or not fitted correctly. Coil overs don't look that great anyhow, if they are anything like TA Technix throw em in the bin anyhow and chalk that one up to experience.

If they are for a MK4 ibiza there shouldnt really be any fitting issues with it, so given you've double checked you have the right parts for a MK4 Ibiza, If they are deffinately correct then I'm baffled, was the camber out initially?

Certainly a strange one.

Camber was fine beforehand.

I can't put the originals back on, I replaced the shocks and springs cause they were shot (and i chopped a spring off), looks like I'm gonna have to buy some more for the front, rear are perfect!! Also, it's confusing why the nearside is worse than the offside!! I've had to use the car a couple of times like this and the shocks seem pretty good at taking bumps, quite smooth tbh!!

I need to order drop link for it today, also sealant for rear doors, gonna refit tomorrow and possibly see what I've done wrong (which I don't think anything is).

Cheers

Ps, defo mk4 (53 plate)

Have you tried to set the coiles higher to see if that helps with the camber? and am I correct in thinking one side of your ARB isnt connected at all (with the droplink)

could just be the angle of the picture but it almost looks like that strut is bent?

Also, check the struts are all the way into the hub, and an even amount on both sides

The struts are pushed in all the way both sides.

And it's the abs sensor wire which makes the strut look bent, it's perfectly straight btw!!

Sorry missed a post there as I'm on my phone, you are correct, only one drop link is in place just now, nearside with worst camber has got one. I'm just about to pop out and get a new one and arb bushes if I can figure out what size my arb is as I've read there are 4 sizes, anyone know the correct size for a 2001 1.4 16v elegance??

Cheers

You'll get more negative camber on the front the lower you go as the axle path is fixed, could it not be that its because your wound all the way down? (although maybe it does look a little extreme).

If all you changed was teh struts then there's not really anywhere for different camber to come from providing all the hub bolts/ball joint stayed in place, and even then it wouldn't change by a noticeable amount really.

If the anti-roll bar is only connected at one side maybe that could affect it? When I replaced my drop-links for shorter ones I noticed the car sat higher on one side with uneven length links, could be that?

I've just ordered two new drop links there, need arb bushes now though!! The bar doesn't even sit tight in the bush, 1-2mm of freeplay!!

Should links make that much difference, that would surely put too much strain on a smallish part?? The handling just now too say is bad is an understatement...

Cheers

really wouldnt use it untill its sorted mate emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Im working on the process of elimination as said there isnt really anywhere else the camber could come from, so fit the new links and see if it makes a difference, also raise the right height and see if putting it up 20mil straightens it out a lot? whats also making me think it could be the ARB is that its worse on one side than the other - certainly unheard of though!!!!

ARB bushes and new drop links ordered, maybe have them tomorrow but more than likely wednesday...

Aye, i suppose it could be the drop links, it had crossed my mind but didn't think it would make that much difference, time will tell

And i don't need a car just now anyway so don't need to use it, just the garage i use to work in is 8 miles away (full of tools and a 4 poster :) )

I'll put it up a touch, but i've seen other cars lower on the same coils with next to no camber :'(

If you've ordered the parts id wait for them and get them fitted first. If its the ARB thats causing it no point raising it, and i've seen some really low ones too. This is why its baffling me...

Aye, think i will wait till get new parts, it gets boring taking off and putting on the same parts, the same way...

Just to show pics before lowering...

Are the top mounts fitted the same way they came off with the damper rod sat correctly?

Not trying to patronise, I saw a thread on here before about someone using TA technix or Gmaxx or something with incorrectly fitted top mounts due to the kit coming with an aliuminium spacer that isn't needed, but they still fitted it. Its always the little things you miss that f**k you up the most.

  • Author

don't worry mate, you're speaking to an air head here...

An aluminium spacer you say, what does this look like?? is that the silver alloy cup thing that sits between the top mount and the spring?? if so i have fitted this as it came with it :giggle:

could be, there shouldn't be anything between the top mount and spring; the spring should sit flush to the lower race of the top mount and the damper rod should sit flush to the top mount body on the underside with nothing between them, then bolted on from the top.

Is it these bits which i've circled (sorry small line which is hard to see)...

Cheers

My coilovers are obviously a different brand, but I certainly don't have them on mine :wonder: What are they?

  • Author

I don't know what they are, no instructions so just presumed they went in there :giggle: next time, read instructions or get a pro to do it i know

I'll take them out when i'm fitting the new stuff i ordered :smirk:

mine just end flat as so

fksilverlinexcoiloverkits.jpg

Yeah, get rid of them bits.

the spring should sit flat against the race of teh top mount/bearing, bin them and refit.
