Wobbly Wing Mirror Glass

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Not seen this in the forums so thought I'd post a topic.

The driver's side wing mirror glass (electrically adjustable) of my 07 plate Octavia Vrs wobbles under acceleration and over speeds of 30 mph. As you can imagine, this is very annoying and visually distracting. The car is under warranty but before I take it back to the dealer I was wondering if any Briskodian knows of how to fix this, is it just a case of removing the cowling and tightening a screw up? Any help would be awesome, planning a trip to relatives and the prospect of the mirror flickering in my peripheral vision for 4 hours is enough reason not to do the journey!

Thankyou!

Woody

The same has happened to both mirrors on SWMBO's MK5 Golf, it's down to the sticky tape that bonds the glass to the mounting bracket failing, it's simple to remove the glass and re fix using a heavy duty double sided tape (carpet tape in our case), which is probably what the dealer will do.

Hiya Woodyallen, I know it's been a while since you attempted surgery on your car but any chance of an update on how the mirror re-sticking went?

I'm about to go & get some carpet tape for exactly the same reason & am a bit wary of b*llsing the whole thing up.. :S

Many thanks in advance of what I sincerely hope will be a reassuring reply which doesn't mention the phrases 'smashed mirror/cracked mirror shroud/all of the above..' ;)

Hiya, yup all went well, I have a rock solid mirror now. I bought number plate tape in the end as that must be pretty hefty. No problems at all, heater works fine too. 2 minute job, go for it.

Cheers for that - I feel suitably reassured - I've been doing my best to decipher the German instructions that I turned up on t'Internet regarding getting the shroud off - looks like you lever up the bit nearest the door first then the rest follows, hopefully without the (expensive) sound of cracking plastic.. :giggle:

THanks again

Very helpful - and don't think I haven't considered something along those lines in case the gaffer tape currently keeping the glass in place gives up.. ;)

If its just the mirror glass than needs repaired, it just clips off,so no need to touch the housing.

Angle the mirror downwards, it give more room to get your fingers in the top of the mirror glass, then gently pull. Remember that there will be two connections

to the heating element when you unclip the glass, the wiring to which is pretty short. They are just spade terminals which should pull off easily enough.

Cheers - I'd like to get the glass out without removing any more of the rest of the assembly than absolutely neccessary.

I believe that the double-sided tape which attaches the glass to the bracket is failing and needs to be replaced, so presumably that's achievable by just removing the mirror glass itself with the bracket attached (not very well anymore it would seem) by the method you've described above..?

Thanks!

Sorted!

Many thanks for all the advice - all very gratefully received.

Thread revival[emoji106][emoji15]. Mirror wobbling like mad on motorway tonight. Opening window mid journey could not understand why when pressing glass it was solid. Once let go started again.

Once stopped it was hanging by the last bit of glue at the top of the glass. Taped the mirror housing around a few times with clear tape and stuffed some tissue against the tape and mirror to continue journey. Thanks to this thread double sided tape placed between mirror and mirror glass holder and mirror restuck on. [emoji106]
