New Scout - a few niggles and questions

Featured Replies

Just picked up a scout from a local dealer who thankfully didn't know much about it and has let it go for a bit of a bargain:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201043371748833/sort/priceasc/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/model/octavia/make/skoda/saved-search-id/2c92181e255dba8801256542e50e000c/radius/1500/page/1/keywords/scout/postcode/le144dw?logcode=p

Just a couple of niggles (which even with my most pessimistic estimate of the proce to fix them still means the car's a good price)

1: It's got no sump guard. Had a good look underneath and the mounting points are fine, no damage as if it had been ripped off. I guess that at a previous service the monkeys who did it didn't put the guard back on.

What sort of cost am i looking at for a replacement? which part number do i need (as well as fixing bolts etc.?

2: the valeters have given the car a good soaking inside and the front windows will not open when the buttons on the driver's door are used. The dealer assures me that they worked before the valet. Should I get the module with the buttons out of the door to give it a good dry off or could this be terminal. Again, what part number is this?

3: there's a good whistle from the turbo (not the mooing that I've heard on other turbos that are on their way out) I suspect that it's a hose with a leak - what's the best way to investigate this?

4: the passenger side rear window has trouble closing, it's as if the seals are too tight gets so tired that it occasionally winds down again (presume it thinks it's got a hand trapped). Is there a common reason for this, and what's the fix?

Otherwise I'm a happy little camper. Have been looking for the right deal to come along for about 6 months so I can finally say goodbye to the old mk1 octy

thanks for any help

I noticed your car yesterday on Autotrader and was suprised at the lack of detail in the description! Not even talk of it's four wheel drive - a significant selling point. This supports your claim that the dealer wasn't too clued up on this rare and sought after car. His loss your gain!

Were you able to negotiate a deal below the £9,000 asking price?

Did you ask what it's being towing? Tow bars on high mileage cars often make me nervous.

Check, double check and triple check for previous accident damage. There is a chance the original sump guard may have been damaged and the repairer has saved a few quid by not replacing it in the hope no one would ever notice.

My 2008 TDi Scout with 18,000 miles has had a whistly turbo from new. However at nearly 90,000 miles yours may be coming to the end of its life?

Once the window switches have dried out they should work again, at least the dealer has confirmed they worked before the valet so they should fix them for free if not.

The rear window just sounds tired to me, try using WD40 on the rubber seal to see if this reduces the resistance and prevents the auto-return function from kicking in.

You'll love the Scout, you've also got a great colour, grey on the pre-facelift is rare.

Just check the alloys, I imagine the infamous delamination will be ready to make an unwelcome appearance if it hasn't already!

Enjoy!

He'd had so much interst that I was happy with the full £9k. (while I was there he had another 2 calls about it!)

There's 1 spot of delamination on one wheel but it'll be covered in mud in no time

The tow-bar is virtually brand new, don't think there's been a lot of towing.

The last owner was a potato consultant in lincolnshire so it's done loads of motorway miles and not excessive off-roading.

From the mounting points I can't see any under-floor damage, there's a small piece of plastic that's cracked under the front bumper but nothing major.

Will give the windows a bit of time to sort themselves out before panicking too much.

Very pleased with the car overall - the silver rails set it of very nicely emoticon-0100-smile.gif

I hadn't noticed the silver rails - a cost option.

Any other non standard options?

I thought my car was standard until I got home and noticed it had xenon headlights. No maxi dot though which considering the cost of the xenon's was suprising.

Sounds as though he's knocked the sump guard off or damaged it and just removed it.

Sorry, can't help you with the cost, someone will be along soon. I don't think it'll break the bank though.

Do a search for posts by London Les. He's taken some great pictures of his brand new Scout from underneath with some great shots of the sump guard.

Either you've been lucky with the alloys or the car has been well looked after and they've already been replaced under warranty. I'm already on my second set :'(

I get the impression you're Scout will spend most of it's time on the wrong side of spotlessly clean (which should be the way for all 4x4's!) so as you say it won't matter.

A lot of car for £9K, you should get a lot more happy miles out of it!

spot on :) This car will probably last me about 4 years and another £120k before it'll be retired - expect it'll just be a withered husk by then :) Most of the time there's plenty of mud and other effluent picked up from various farms and the inside of my old car has a certain aroma that is certainly special!

can't wait until monday to put the first 100 miles on it and get off road a bit :)

That gives me a good idea of what's missing. Looks like just the main black metal part has gone, all of the plastic side parts are present and ready to be bolted to.

cheers

Looks like a bargain. As you bought it from a dealer it will have a warranty on it so get them to sort out the windows.

For info - the main bit of the sump guard is heavy duty plastic on my MY11 TDI Scout - I'm not sure whether this has changed during or before the facelift. It looks like steel or alloy, but if you knock it and use a magnet, it is definitely plastic.

Weight saving or cost saving - you can decide!

That'd be irritating if I can't get a metal one. Need the protection for the sump really...
