strange ticking noise without anything on?!

Featured Replies

But of a weird one this, just got in my car without nothing on, no a/c, radio, engine, or electrics etc apart from the ignition and there was a consistent ticking coming from behind the dashboard sounds almost like the hazard warning indicator but just quieter. Its obviously electrical as its only happening when the ignition is switched on, can't really notice it with the engine running because of the noise but its a definite tick as I said sounds similar to hazards or the indicator.

Was thinking it could be a relay or something,

If anyone could help as to point what it might be would be great!

thanks

Lew

Hi mate, I've got the same problem, sounds like an intermittent indicator noise when nothings on. Bloke in garage, and several google search results, seem to point towards a dodgy indicator relay. I'm getting mine replaced on Friday so will let you know if this fixes the problem.

Hi mate, pretty sure mine is to do with the re-circ valve as the clicking can vary and is quicker than an indicator ticking. Let me know if it helps anyway mate

Got the indicator relay replaced but it didn't fix the problem. Garage says that it's probably a connection fault on the indicator stalk. I'm going to get a quote for getting a new one fitted. If it's loads then I'll sort it out myself. Just to recap, the noise is exactly the same as that of the indicators, just sporadic. I'm guessing there's some kind of speaker to produce the clicking noise when you indicate. I think it's the signal to this that is dodgy as otherwise the indicator lights would be going on with the noise, which they aren't.

I'll keep you updated on my progress...

Hi mate, this is not the same noise as my car! mine has an intermittent ticking from the V71 valve, made worse and noticeable when altering temperatures/re-circ on the climate control module sounds like

this valve there loses it's home, and the ticking is trying to find it sort of

Get a can of electrical contact cleaner and spray liberal amounts at the root of the indicator stalk. Will probably fix it, no need to disassemble anything thing. I had the exact same symptoms as you and this is how I dealt with it. Also it worked on an acquintance's mkiv golf that had the same problem. Cheap, too.

I tried the electrical spray and it made it worse initially before settling back to being intermittent. I took the hazard fuse out and that made no difference but the noise stopped when I removed the indicator fuse. Looks like a new indicator stalk, £50 from skoda garage. What slightly puzzles me is that if there is a contact fault in the stalk, causing the clicker to sound, why aren't the indicator lights also flickering?
