strange ticking noise without anything on?!

Featured Replies

But of a weird one this, just got in my car without nothing on, no a/c, radio, engine, or electrics etc apart from the ignition and there was a consistent ticking coming from behind the dashboard sounds almost like the hazard warning indicator but just quieter. Its obviously electrical as its only happening when the ignition is switched on, can't really notice it with the engine running because of the noise but its a definite tick as I said sounds similar to hazards or the indicator.

Was thinking it could be a relay or something,

If anyone could help as to point what it might be would be great!

thanks

Lew

You need to watch out being in the midlands.

You don't have a Printer in your boot do? Could explain the ticking noise. :giggle:

I don't know pal can't help, just trying to be funny :dull:

air recirculation flap in the heater controls maybe - it is louder on the passenger side of the car, as that is where I think that unit is located (behind the glovebox)?

Have you checked that your indicators are actually working? The relay (or stalk) may be faulty and causing the clicking.

i dont get a ticking noise ..... but like a pump pushing liquid through some pipes down in the passenger footwell this is with everything off including the ignition

Good suggestion, sorry I should have added to the original post everything electrical is working spot on, and yes it is louder on the passengers side.. if I turn the heaters up some notches the noise can go away but I'm not sure whether its just the heaters getting louder or not.. I thought it might be something to do with the heating system but wasn't 100% makes all sorts of noises some times

Think you've cracked it mate, many thanks!

I know that noise, that's just the air con refrigerant. I asked this question before when I first got the car thinking it could possibly be head gasket failure de-pressurising or something 'bubbling' so don't worry about it

So assuming it is the re-circ flap.. Need I worry about it?

Thinking about it again, it might be as simple as a leaf being caught in the blower assembly. If you turn the fans off, does the sound continue? The blower assembly is behind the glove box too.

iirc, the air-recirculation thing will log a fault on vag-com.

Yes, the noise is there regardless of anything being on

I'll stick with my original guess then

Apart from throwing a wobbler on VAGCOM it's not going to affect anything else is it? Everything seems to be working okay?

Thanks a million for your help

apart from making an annoying clicking, wearing itself out and probably nor working properly..... you might find air recirculate does not work.... so be ready to hold your breath next time you drive down a country road where a farmer has just been spreading slurry on his fields....

Not the end of the world, sounds like a dash out jobby.. when it breaks and my heaters don't work i'll fix it... maybe :p

Mine's been knackered for a while, and has never logged a fault - the only time VAGCOM shows a problem is when you try to run a basic setting on it.

Is it the same as mine ticking?

It's gone past that - it was scratching backwards and forwards intermittently and now it just doesn't move.

Does it make any noises now?

I can live with silence and without a re-circ valve lol

I disconnected mine and left it in the fresh air position.

It's a bodge for sure but beats that firkin noise lol

Be prepared for scratched hands/wrist and lots and lots of swearing even when just trying to unplug the stupid thing.

Theres two plugs in there iirc and you need the top one

Just re-read the subject line, and my smart ar$e comment is:

"Put some clothes on, the ticking sound is your teeth chattering"

Just a thought. I believe the vRS has an electric fuel pump. I had a similar ticking noise on a previous petrol car with the engine off and the ignition switch on. It was a relay bringing in the fuel pump (in the tank) when the fuel pressure dropped. Mine was several seconds between ticks.

Hi Mike, this noise is definitely in the car, would have thought the fuel pump relay would be under the bonnet, it is completely silent under the bonnet I already checked. Pretty sure it isn't that (well, i hope it isnt lol)

Any chance you could find me a picture of it because I have no idea what the connector even looks like and where it is?

Haha, I re-read it myself and thought of something else to do with ticking noise with nothing on.. not really safe to post on here with lol :smirk:

Here is the guide to replacing the V71 re-circ air flap motor.. this is for a golf but i'd imagine the process to be massively similar
