egr valve help

Featured Replies

hi guys i need your help, my car is bunny hopping in all gears as i drive and have been told its my egr valve (confirmed by code) but i dont know where it is please help anybody its a fabia 16v petrol 2000 if that helps

cheers

Its on the right and front of the engine as you look at it next to the exhaust manifold. Its got two 13mm nuts holding it on and a metal pipe that curves around and goes back to the throttle body.

Well worth checking under the throttle body first that the port isnt blocked.

The EGR valve should'nt make the car bunny hop in any gear, sounds like another problem which also affects the EGR unit/sensor. The EGR basically only recirculates the exhaust gases at low revs to reduce emissions and even if you disconnect the EGR it will not affect engine running (apart from engine light coming on unless you tell ECU not to read the EGR). These EGR's are a complete pain in the backside (forum confirms many owners with problems) but a good clean or a new one is easily done by any garage at no more than 1 hour labour (you can get new EGR for £60 on ebay). But your bunny hopping does sound like another problem, sorry.

Not sure I agree with that 100%

Say the problem is excessive EGR flow and the valve is stick open, what happens then? No or low compression on cylinder four and a missfire which could cause those symptoms. Wouldnt matter is EGR is in operation or not if its jammed off its seat which it normally is.

thanks guys im giving the car a full service and need to check the throttle body aswell, if its full of carbon i gues a carburettor cleaner and a toothbrush would do the trick right guys?? : / but guys would keep you posted as soon as i finished post a few pictures of the egr valve

cheers guys

Yeah thats fine but remove it from the car first, dont spray the carb cleaner and crud into the mainfold.

The throttle body will need alignment with VCDS if you unplug it (might be worth doing this anyway, along with the EGR valve.

If there is a lot of oil about and your engine code is AUA or AUB you might be looking at a issue with the piston rings which is forcing oil into the inlet.

thanks ive had a look at the valve and theres oil around the outside of the throttle body what could it mean??, and ive had a look at the egr valve and need to clean badly thought i should point out that the car has gone through 2 bottles of castrol gtx in 6 months the car just drinks way too much oil, could this be the piston ring issue ??

cheers for all your help mate

as you can there oil aound the throttle body is that usual?, by the way the egr valves right besides it aint it lol with the cable had a deep look at its full of deposits :'(

so im going to take the entire body off the car including the egr valve and give them a clean hopefully it'l sove the problem fingers crossed

cheers

The egr valve is at the front of the engine, and tbh that valve doesn't look as bad as some I've seen.

Sorry, Tech1e may have a point (seems quite knowledgeable on the subject), not considered what happens if its excessive flow . I have been plagued with insufficient flow on diagnostic and car runs no different (even if EGR disconnected). Tried cleaning EGR, then replaced with new one but warning light with same code keeps coming back. Garage confirmed that likely cause is that the EGR code will need to be re-set at the ECU so having done this week. TBH did not realise that a simple device to just reduce emissions at low revs can be such a pain in the backside. I hope yours is easily fixed.

p.s. I have an AUB engine and worried about the piston ring stories I hear. It drinks little oil (250ml-500ml) a month, but if I go on a journey where I do 70mph+ (say a long run on the motorway) then at end of the actual Journey have to top up between 250ml-500. Fabia has done 70K but always drives smoothly, no smoke, juddering or anything. Not sure if this good or bad. My other car, a Focus 1.8 Zetec has done nearly double the miles and burns no oil at all (in fact the Fabia has been the heaviest consumer of oil of any car I've had, as none hardly ever used any). But still like my Fabia!
