Buying Advice Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site, I'm in the market for a new, reliable car thats going to last a while and always been a fan of the VRS..

I have spent a couple of hours behind the wheel of a black one the other week and it drove spot on, no noises that shouldnt be there or anything, was more than impressed with the performance, didnt expect it to be as quick as it was... didnt have chance to find out how it handled though :S

It is an 06 reg one, its in black (best color) very clean and tidy throughout, its one owner from new, full skoda history upto 100k as follows BUT it does have 165k on the clock

Service 15/06/2006 @ 10073 miles

Service 29/09/2006 @ 20640 miles

Service 31/01/2007 @ 30570 miles

Service 04/05/2007 @ 40601 miles

Service 20/08/2007 @ 50503 miles

Service 14/11/2007 @ 60402 miles

Service 30/01/2008 @ 69686 miles

Service 02/05/2008 @ 79884 miles

Service 08/08/2008 @ 90474 miles

Service 26/11/2008 @ 101115 miles

I have been offered the car for a very nice price reflecting the mileage and its from a friend too.

The car was from north hampton reg starts OY06, it was bought by my friend from Mercedes-Benz, did this car belong to a forum member???

my only concern really is the mileage, is this considered to be a lot for one of these cars, and should i steer clear? or shall i invest in it, my only concern is reliability at that mileage, i cant afford for it to be breaking down all the time, all advice will be much appreciated.

thanks :)

If it is about 2k then go for it!!

Nothing wrong with 100k on the clock. Mines now on 93k.

Has the rear wishbone bushes been replaced? If not expect to pay around £200 to have them replaced. This can be the same on a car that's only done 20k miles.

Lower gearbox mount if original could probably do with replacing. But only costs £30 from skoda.

How's the back brakes? Mines now due it's second set (last 40-50k per set).

Other than that no problem :)

So its done 64,000 miles since it's last recorded service and no evidence of any work carried out since ??

The cambelt, auxiliary belt, water-pump, G12 anti-freeze will most likely require replacing A.S.A.P (garage bill about £300-£350) being my main concern.

Followed with a full service, including a good look at brake disc/pads.

This would reflect in the price your willing to pay, as mileage at 4 years old is excessive @ 40,000 miles average per annum.emoticon-0114-dull.gif

Just seen this (attachment) by tapping in Trovits used cars, so for a bit more get a better vehicle.

I'm not entirely convinced that there are no receipts to proove further history, i'd be shocked to see that a one owner car with main dealer history upto 100k would just stop being serviced...

I have no idea about breaks or rear wishbone bushes but when i was driving it everything seemed nice and a lot better than i expected for 165k...

I have been offered the car for £3500 which is considerably cheaper than the cheapest vRS on autotrader, I'm just unsure on this one as it is high mileage, very high mileage...

You seem to have your mind set on this car, just need someone to agree with your opinion/view for you to go ahead with a sale.??

Look at the one ABOVE I entered earlier (giandougl) it beats what your thinking of buying for a few hundred quid more. !!!emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Surely there's got to be something wrong with that car to be going at that price with such low mileage!!!! I've just part-ex'd my 06 plate vRS with 41,000 on the clock for just under 5k!!!

Cheers

Dave.

£3500 is waaaay too much for a car with 165,000 miles on it. And especially one with a gaping hole in it's service history. I'd leave it and wait for one that is either better priced or has less potential to be a money-pit.

If you have a look at my vRS dilemma thread you'll see that I reckon my almost perfect 120,000 mile '06 reg car is only worth about £3000, so I'm going to stick to my guns and say £3500 is too much. Leave it.

Since it's a friend who's offered you this car, haven't you asked him more about the service history? Even without receipts there are boxes to tick on the book for additional works - it should be on its third cambelt by now at 60k intervals and be due another one soon.

He doesn't know as he is a motor trader, he knows as much as I've put on here, I'm really unsure due to the miles but it is the cheapest one around at the mo, my other consideration is an occty vrs but I'm looking at an older car for the price I'm looking to spend... Car buying is all a headache!!

So you've been offered this car by a dealer - but presumably, since that fact's only just emerged, without the usual safeguards of buying through a dealer?

Network Q Used Car Valuation relates the following:

Part-exchange Price:

Excellent condition: £3060

Average condition: £2750

Below average condition: £2420

Please note: Unfortunately, we don't have a valuation for the requested mileage. However, we can value this car at 150,000 miles.

Since the service history is seriously deficient it falls into the "Below average" category. Looks like he's trying to do you here and make a fast buck himself!
