Selling car with private plates

Featured Replies

I'll be wanting to sell my current car soon. It has a private plate that I don't want to be transferred to a new car. Do dealers offer anything extra for private plate cars, e.g. so they can sell them on in auction?

I am considering getting it transferred onto certificate to auction off. However, its doesn't seem to be worth it considering the total cost of getting it transferred, new tax & insurance fees just to keep it on the road before selling it.

Any advice?

Unless the plate is something special, i wouldn't bother doing anything.

Have a look at plate valuation sites, but take them with a pinch of salt.

Mum had a plate she was told would sell for £2k by a website. Took it off her car, and eventually ended up not renewing the plate transfer, as the plate had been for sale at £250 for 2 years.

Fair enough. I have contacted the usual suspects who have quoted around £400 for it. I think it was purchased for just under £200. So I'm not too worried. I just wondered whether dealers bother to take the plates off and auction them off, or just sell the car on with them on.

If your not bothered about it display the plate on here, you never know it may suit someone. £200 in your pocket rather than the stealers

Thing is it's going to cost to get it on certificate, then for me to faff about with re-taxing the car, only to sell it in a few months time.

Unless it's car related rather than personally to you then it really isn't worth it IMO and if it's 'only' been valued at £400 then it can't be anything 'special'

The only problem then is it will be deemed an advert and get pulled by he mod's as he is not a freedom member

No the dealer won't give you any more for the plate. They may sell it on if they think it worth anything though.

You will get a new tax disc for free up to the expiry date of the existing disc and that is included in the transfer fee as does a new V5 and MOT cert.

If the reg. plate is car related then you might as well leave it on unless you are buying a newer model of the same marque, if a personal reg. no. then do you want to keep it? you can transfer it onto your new car for free as you have already paid the retention fee. Was £90 last time I transferred one.
