i had a look under my car the other day and notices that the exhaust heat shield ( inverted trough thingy that sits over the back box) has lost one of it's nuts. obviously this need replacing before the thing falls off, any ideas on thread size / nut designation?

Mine did the same earlier in the year. It lost one of those 50p sized discs that hold the heat shield up. I only noticed because every time I slammed the boot shut they'd be this metallic rasping noise as the heat shield vibrated. I ended up popping down to my local Skoda garage and picking up one of those discs for 20p. Cheap as chips!

Yeah, OEM is best - although a repair washer held on with a blob of epoxy would do, I guess...

I work for an Engineering firm ( oil & gas industry) and figured it'd be a nut and washer jobby i can pilfer from stores, never mind, i'll pop round the garage on saturday and get it sorted.

The washers on mine have come off too, and I was wondering what was sometimes rattled at the back. I have temporary fixed it with a plastic tie wrap around the screw. They have been there a few months and are still there in one piece (not melted yet). :thumbup:

If I remember I will still look out for some proper washer things.

I'll remind you of that when your fuel tank gets too hot from your exhaust and your car busts into flames. :p

nah never got too hot in 12 months

plus isn't the fuel tank on ze other side?

Ahh, you know what it could be? It could be because I'm viewing this on my iPod touch. I've heard that there's been some probs with Apple products not adjusting from BST. Your post is showing as having been posted an hour later than you say it was posted. I'll go check on my laptop now...

you need to adjust the time format in your user settings :thumbup:

Maybe you need to buy an app to get GMT?

Referring to the original post, I had the same problem on my car, the heat sink is held on by captive washers that rust through, not the best design by far. Got it fixed at a garage, think they welded them on or something like that. As previously mentioned, it is close to the fuel tank so I'd rather keep the heat sink where it is and securely fastened!

Re-animating this topic!

I have bought new clips for my heat shield - they are now plastic - 18p each. But, I can't fit them on, I can't see how to get the wide washer-equivalent bit under the lugs on the shield and the screw thread is too short to get it on over the lugs. Any ideas?

Hi, welcome to Briskoda.

I mentioned above, I used 2 small tie-wraps to hold mine on and even after a year they seam to be stll there.

i bought some new exhaustt sheild nuts from my local TPS for 28p, they were metal ones and did the job fine

Mine came loose, I repaired it with bits from work, it came loose again, so I just pulled the back section off.

As said, the fuel tank isn't anywhere near the back part of the shield (the bit that falls off), so your only really protecting the spare wheel from 'heat', just bin it and have done.
