Anti Stall Device

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone. Have a new Octavia 1.6 TDI which seems to have an anti stall device that is a little bit disconcerting when you are not used to it. Any help in getting over the problem would be appreciated.

Cheers Tony

Is it your first diesel? they tend not to stall as easily as petrols.

You cannot get around it, the diesel engine behaves like this. My old PD140 Octavia could pull away in first and second gear without the use of any throttle at all. You do get used to it and adapt your driving style to match.

What "problem"? Diesels have always had automatic idle speed control if that is what you mean. Great for trickling along/pulling away in traffic queues.

Just dont try declutching late in a highb gear. You'll get used to it.

Yes - I've been there on the 2.0 TDI common rail. It is a bit disconcerting when you brake in high gear (the gear change recommendation pushs you into sixth anywhere about 40mph), and the car accelerates when you come off the brake, because the engine revs are low. I think because the engine is very smooth, its not noticeable that you are close to stalling without looking at the tacho, and so its a surprise.

The answer is to declutch and change down a bit earlier when slowing up.

The feature was excellent in the snow however, combined with ASR and EDL - the car would crawl out of slippery spots really well.

Cheers,

Les.
