I've been looking into the best way to hook up iPod to my Polo (2004) and I'm liking the sound of the Parrot mki9000. It works via bluetooth as a handsfree and has cables to connect iPods and USB sticks.

Sounds expensive! lol

allthough im waiting on my iphone ariving in the post and if its got bluetooth aswell that does sound quite good!!

There are the Connects2 units available that just plug into the multi disc port on the back of the HU. There are two types the AUX version which just has a 3.5mm headphone plug which you plug into the iPhone, iPod or mp3 player and you hear your music through the car speakers, and control the volume with the HU. Also as a hands free kit too on the iPhone. Then there is the other version that is a little more expensive and you can select playlists from the HU as well as controlling the volume.

I think they are £30-odd and £60-odd quid respectively.

I'm about to sell my Connect2 AUX unit as i'm selling the car if anyone's interested.

Thing is FM sound qualiy is crap compared to CD quality which is what you get with the Connects2 units.

TBH can't really tell the difference between it and playing a CD - and I'm a bit of a museo! Got it connected to a Sony NWZ-A818( http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/sony-nwz-a818-8gb/4505-6490_7-32593873.html ) and I must admit I did have to tweak the EQ and crank the volume to get a decent level and sound but over all it sounds very good. Also I am running the stock stereo atm and still haven't fitted my sub so it would possibly sound worse with a better stereo that played a more diverse frequency spectrum.

Ive been into skoda and asked about this and there isnt any way of connecting an ipod to the standard head unit only way is with one of those fm adaptors that plug into your ipod and i have 1 and they arnt that good you pick up to much interferance.

Odd, Skoda in Aylesbury told me a year ago about a Dension kit they'd supply me. About £150+ but still an option. I just got a new HU for it instead.

I've had a couple of the FM transmitters but never get the same quality as CD's or an mp3 player. I think you need a proper education in music if you can't tell the difference between FM quality and CD/mp3 quality. ;)

If FM was so good there'd be no need for DAB. But we digress and each to their own.

I'm obviously imagining our iPhones playing through our Connects2 units and OEM HU's in both our vRS's then..... :)

Bickertons in Sheffield used to have the Dension unit on display in the showroom so god knows what your dealer is on about then.

If you want decent sound quality why use mp3's in the first place - CDs are better...

FM broadcast quality vs. CD quality, the signal is analog, not digital, so it's pretty safe to say that it's not quite as perfect as a CD, but you are also broadcasting that signal inches from your antenna so the signal is generally MUCH better than standard FM radio. It goes back to the same old 340kb vs. 160kb MP3 debate.... There are very few people that can really tell the difference... and on a crappy standard stereo there really is not much in it.

Nope. All depends on the bit rate of the MP3. In fact MP3s can sound better then CD if they are encoded at more then 256kbits/s ;)

lol Well i could tell a clear difference between the FM transmitter and the Connects2.... I must be gifted. ;)

I agree with you on the second point re: mp3 and CD though.

It's rather widely held that DAB sound quality is WORSE than FM. See http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/dab/intro_dab.htm Wait until Dab + before buying any DAB unit, or ensure the manufacture guarantees it will be user upgradeable to DAB +.

Too late.... We're a totally DAB household and have been for years now.... Apart from the cars that is. FM is dodgy in this neck of the woods because of the surrounding hills. :) FM transmitters are local one's where as the DAB transmitter is the rather larger Emley Moor.

You using one with a stock stereo are you?

Yep OEM Symphony HU and factory fit speakers in both cars.

You could blindfold me and i'd tell the difference straight away. Maybe i've been spoilt having a home cinema system etc.... to listen to my music on for the past 19 years.

Nope not gifted just a person with ears, FM Transmitters do as they say, they transmit some are great some are poor but they all seem to require that you turn both the media player and your stereo up a good deal before you hear the sound and even the best ones seem to suffer from bass popping. The Connects 2 and Denson units physically connect to the back of your Stereo via the aerial input or multi changer input. So technically they aren't really transmitting.

The other option as mentioned is the Parrot kits and chances are you'll get away without needing an SOT lead as well, their is one big however. Check how new the Parrot kit is, more specifically has it been updated to the latest software. Parrot have only just got round to releasing an update for their kits to make it work with the latest Iphone and Ipod Touch, prior to that the systems would lock up, fail to access music files, and cause the Parrot kit to shut down and restart. You'd need to update the Parrot kit as well as the Iphone to make sure it works correctly.

Of course the cheapest option would be just to throw in a new stereo you can pick up ones that will do the whole Ipod thing for as little as £60 now.

I found the connect2 kit on the internet. But i know this might not matter but it says that its only good for 2000-2005, and ive got a 2006. would that matter?

I know the fm transmiter things are the cheapest and easiest option but i really wanted everything to work through the head unit.

Mine was on a 2006 vRS and it's worked fine.

Not if they're encoded from a CD source, can't have information that's not there in the first plase ;)

I have had one of these in the Fab for just over a year now, not fantastic, but works well. With a Brodit holder I get to listen to the music and charge it. Makes TomTom on the iPhone useful too, and not just a battery drain.

I've got a parrot MKi9000 kit in my car and it is quite nice, i have only just been able to use it properly since i upgraded my iPhone to the newer software (about 3-4months ago).

All i can say is it's okay. It charges the phone whilst its plugged in, the menu system works well and you can control the iPhone/iPod from the steering wheel controls if you have it plugged in (i'm unsure if they've sorted it so you can control it over bluetooth yet - you never used to be able to.

The only negative point is the lack of sound quality. Sure its okay, but there's no balance or fade control (which is annoying as i still have the back tweeters plugged in, but i fade it slightly forwards and it balances it out nicely, i can't do that when playing through the parrot kit). Also the equaliser is crappy purely just because the parrot amp is crappy. It works as follows:

Head Unit ---> Parrot Unit ---> Speakers

In my opinion, after having this kit for 8-9months, you're better off getting on of those cables and playing it through your HU. I rarely use my iPhone for music in the car and tend to copy everything onto CD. If you are only planning on buying the kit for the music aspect of it, don't - if you were going to buy a carkit anyway, its one of the best choices.

All that being said, the parrot kit is an amazing iPhone car kit and it does everything you could want from it (other than balance/fade!) - it could just do all these things much better :)
