Buying a high mileage tfsi

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Can any of you knowledgeable briskodians give me any advice on what to look out for when purchasing a high mileage 2.0 Tfsi?

I've been offered a bargain 07 plate, but it's done 110k.

Now I am guessing as it was Roger Reps car, it's going to be mainly motorway miles, and it does have full main dealer history, but should I be worried about buying it?

It drives absolutely fine but was wondering what potentially could go wrong due to it's mileage...I'm thinking cam followers and the like, possibly even changing the turbo?

Should I be concerned, or take an opportunity to grab a bargain?

Also, if I did need to swap the turbo, any idea on price? Standard and hybrid?

TIA

Regards

Damo

If it's been dragged up and down motorways, the engine and transmission should be OK. But if it's got ESP, I'd walk away unless you can get a decent discount against the likely future failure of the ABS pressure sensor. For more, Google Teves Mk 60...

Thanks for the reply fella

Googled that... Oh dear :-(

Makes for pretty grim reading.

I will check if it has ESP, but I'm pretty sure it does.

The light wasn't on though, but makes you wonder if they have bought it cheap and disconnected the light.

I guess the only way to tell, is take vag-com and do a diagnostic, check for any codes.

Surely though, it can't put people off too much, or nobody would buy a second hand vag car would they?

Maybe a private warranty would be a worthwhile investment as well?

Aside from the ESP potential fail, is there any other things to look out for? Other than brake discs/pads etc?

TIA

What history has it got mate , cambelt needs checking , cant remember the intervals but its gonna be online , what about an aa check or a good local mechanic .

60k or four years for the cambelt - good spot. As for the ESP thing, it's not something well-publicised, and I know of at least one person who's bought a VAG car with the ESP light on in good faith after being told it was due to the battery being disconnected. Caveat emptor and all that...

Good job your loaded then Pete ;-)

So...cambelt and potential ABS/ESP fault, anything else that I should be aware of?

TIA

Damo

You can tell if someone has taken the bulb out of the ESP light. Push the button and the little skidding car should light up on the dashboard. If it doesn't, then there's no bulb in there.

Ha wont be soon

I would check out the fuel pump follower...

Is it easy to check the fuel pump follower Len? or does it require specialist assistance?

Maybe, I should stop being so over cautious, and just get a private warranty as well, which hopefully should cover the ABS/ESP potential failure...Does that sound a reasonable idea?

Just dont want to regret it if I do decide to seal the deal

Cheers
