Clutch slipping ?

Featured Replies

In 5th and 6th around 3k rpm at times when I put my foot down the revs jump to 4k+ and then the car speeds up.

I know it can't be wheel spin in 5th and 6th but it's what it feels like, the car has been mapped and made 162/286 on the rolling road but my intercooler is broke so it should be making more power - it doesn't do it all the time

I've been looking at clutches on eBay and I see one at around £200

I guess if it is the clutch it's going to get worse but why is it only doing it in 5th or 6th?

It won't be anything to do with the fact I have gone from barely legal front tyres to two brand new ones and it's just gripping better :-/ that sounds stupid lol but I'm hoping it's anything but the clutch

Hopefully your not wheel spinning in 5th lol.

And i may be wrong. But a OEM clutch wont cut it.

Will need an uprated one to handles to handle the tourqe :'(

yup thats the clutch spinning away!

£200 for a clutch?

is it made from cheese?

your looking at £600 odd notes for an uprated sachs and £200 for a new Flywheel

I did 200 miles mainly in 6th going from 55mph to 80ish that's what's prob done it not changing down to 5th but seemed to get better mpg in 6th at 60ish mph

So a clutch cant be fixed it has to be replaced? If the answer is it has to be replaced, do u know anyone who's wants to buy a mint fabia vrs

nah if the clutch is slipping you either need to return the car to standard power and drive sensibly

or replace with a new unit which could possibly go the same way in 20 or 30k

or uprate

Well I do 10k a year so would make sense uprating but the cars on 96k is it worth it on such a high mileage car?

The clutch slips in 6th/5th because that's when it's hardest to turn the wheels. 96k is a fair mileage for a clutch to wear out, depending on use.

I only got it 1500 miles ago and I came from a Clio 182 and revved the nuts off it, I thought by driving in 5th n 6th I'd improve mpg but think I've buggered my clutch in doing so and not changing to 4th to boot it

No, you haven't buggered it. Most likely it was already well worn. You can use 6th from about 50mph if you're gentle on the pedal, boot it from 60ish should be OK. Giving it too much welly at low revs will rattle the DMF to bits, but the clutch shouldn't slip under any circumstances, though your remap makes it more likely.

For the time being, just go gently on it.

You'll be needing a new clutch :-(

or if your like me try and blow it up asap so you can uprate :)

Be realistic - you bought a 96k car, so it can't be "mint" (I sold my previous one at 64.5k since it had started feeling "tired") - and at that mileage you should expect some routine replacements, such as a new clutch. I find it disturbing that you do not know the difference between "repair" and "replace" when it comes to clutches - didn't you know clutches wear, like brakes and tyres? Just get a new clutch fitted if it really turns out to be that.

I suppose you don't know whether an uprated clutch has been fitted already?

Ok its now slipping in all gears, I've got a 200 mile drive tomorrow will it be ok to drive? I don't want it giving in completely :(

Don't use the torque, use the (limited :D) rev band instead. :)

No DRJ it's a standard clutch and yes I know the difference between repair and replace - also I was being sarcastic saying it's mint.

I know clutches wear, thanks for the advice :-/

I wouldn't.

I've upgraded my AA membership just incase :)

I reckon it should be OK if you drive it calmly. No foot down until about 2.5k revs. Mine's slipping occasionally. It went away for ages and was fine, then reappeared recently. As far as I know it's the original clutch (nothing mentions a new clutch in the service history)... it's got 117k on the clock now... and it's remapped with a hybrid :-)

Yeah, my standard clutch slipped for a while after I glazed the friction surface, but it settled down after a few weeks of sensible driving, and is fine with 320 torques and 102k on the clock. If yours is slipping in ALL gears, though, it seems pretty terminal... :(

Mine was slipping at 106k when i got my last Fabia from Col...and it was still slipping at 132k when i got rid.

I'm sure it would've lasted a lot longer, i just drove around it as such.

Anyway Chris, you have my PM if you're stuck dude :)

Try this place to get a new clutch fitted, really top blokes and do it at a fraction of the price of the stealers

it comes and goes if I don't floor it it's ok in 3rd and 4th but I can't drive it properly well the way i like to drive.

It will hopefully go away if I drive like a normal person lol

Drive it normal for a bit and see if it goes away.

Mine was slipping in third a fair amount about a week and a half a go, after I had accidentally lifted the clutch still in 6th at low speed (20/30mph.... queue much unhealthy sounding vibrating). It seems fine again after taking it easy for a few days.
