Help! Reluctant Speedo needle

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I have a 51 plate TDI Fabia Elegance. My speedo needle is playing up (maybe it doesn't like the cold). Three times I noticed it wasn't working then it righted itself. On Friday I started the car and drove home (2 miles) and it didn't work. Rev counter, fuel gauge and temp gauge all working as are the lights, rear window heater, heated seats. No warning lights coming up. Took the car to Euromaster on Saturday to get the battery checked. Battery failing (73%) so I replaced the battery. Alternator tested at the same time. All good. Drove the car home and the speedo worked. Great as I have to drive to the West Country (200 miles) on Friday. Didn't drive the car on Sunday. Monday morning drove to the station to go to work - speedo not working. Drove home tonight - speedo not working. Anyone any idea as the thought of driving on the motorway at the weekend without a speedo is very scary!! I would be very grateful for any opinions.

Thanks, Edge

you need vagcom plugged into your car and taken for a test drive, there is also a test that can be done on the speed sender (behind front left wheel).

Any idea what sort of money plugging a vagcom in costs (I assume that this is a diagnostics tool?). Sorry but I don't have much experience of garages apart from MOT's etc - the car has always been so reliable!

Someone on here who is near you might do it for an arrangement (normally A LOT cheaper than a garage). Put out a word on here asking for VAGCOM help.
