Lego wheels - Skoda response

Featured Replies

Went into dealer yesterday as my FL petrol Octavia is saying it needs a service at 9300 miles.

The guy at the service desk mumbled something about it coming up early to try to persuade people to book it in by 10,000 although someone on here previously said it is because the standard servicing is set to 15000km. Anyway I was told come back in 700 miles despite the fact a spanner appears in the display every time I start the engine now.

The other beef is that my previously silent progress is now interrupted by an annoying rumble that sounds like a wheel bearing has gone. This was immediately identified by the service choppy as a problem with the rear geometry settings leading to a stepped profile on the tyres. Sure enough we popped outside and ran our hands over the inside edge ofa rear tyre revealing a lego like profile.

The obvious question was then: what are Skoda doing about this? His response was that new geometry settings have been issued and that this has been a known fault for a long time. Asked why Skoda had not contacted me to get the car in and change the settings I was told that because it isn't a safety issue they wouldn't do that. Next question: how much per corner for a new tyre? Answer: about £150.

His advice was that I ring Skoda directly to complain about this as it appears that I am even expected to pay for realignment to the new settings despite the fact that it's a known fault! This is before any consideration of the damage caused to the tyres by the wrong settings.

Has anyone out there had any luck getting Skoda to acknowledge this known fault and sort out their geometry settings? Secondly there is plenty of tread left so if the settings were sorted and tyres swapped front to back would this cure the dreaded rumble?

I believe the revised settings have now been dropped.

Any further on this chaps and chapesses?

My car was new in July. Have done 4500 miles. Is my rear geometry likely to be out / wrong? Are my tyres on the way to being prematurely damaged?

Have thought about having Blackboots in Chesham give it the once-over, but don't feel that I should be paying for it!!

I believe the revised settings have now been dropped.

Why?

I only had my car realigned to the revised camber settings a couple of weeks ago!

Seems to be an awful lot of people who have just accepted this and stumped up for revised wheel alignment and even new tyres. Has anyone had any luck getting Skoda to acknowledge this fault and do something about it?

As above, has anyone successfully persuaded a dealership to sort out the rear camber settings under warranty?

mine was services at 9300 miles and has this issue. I was told that it was an issue which was common and not a lot can be done about. I was also told it was more common on VRS models rather than the rest of the model range. I can get them to geometry check the vehicle for 75 quid plus VAT but im sure i can get it done cheaper elsewhere but not going to bother for the time being as i have 7mm left on the rears so am going to put up with the noise and monitor for now. Once it gets to the point i need a new tyre, i will get 4 weel alignment done the same time.

Skoda wont pay for any of it though!

Thanks Rob. Thought as much.

Does anyone know for sure whether this problem still affects 2010 Octys?

If it does, might have mine sorted now....

mine is a 2010 vrs

So is mine. Has everyone else had the same response as Rob?

Took mine to the dealer after about 5,000 miles and identified sawtoothing of the rear tyres (Dunlop Sport Maxx). Dealer had a look and adjusted the rear geometry as 'good will' (probably something to do with the fact that they had supplied me with the wrong locking wheel nut, and I had a big egg on the side of one of my front tyres from a pothole at the time!).

Took it in for a service at 10,000 miles and mentioned the fact that the new tyres on the rear (Michelins with 5,000 miles) look like they also might be starting to sawtooth.

I was shown a letter from Skoda (which I apparently wasn't supposed to see) stating something like that it was a common problem and that there was not a lot they could do. So no action from the dealer.

I will keep an eye on the tyres, and they will go on the front when I get some new ones and I will probably have a alignment check carried out at the same time. The Michelins do seem to be less affected, as they are assymetrics rather than directional like the Dunlops).

Other people seem to have had some success with setting the geometry up, but not setting up at the mid point of the values, but towards one end of the range that is quoted (this was on another thread on the forum and I don't know which way it was).

I got my alignment done at an independent - both front and rear and it cost me £45.

I then bumped my gums a bit at the dealer and they said they cant put it through as a warranty claim but out of courtesy and goodwill they filled the tank up for me

So technically i was better off by £20 :giggle:

The dealer I took the car to (not even the dealer I bought the car from) swapped the wheels front to back and adjusted the rear geometry under warranty. They even washed the car. Very helpful.

Which dealer was that ?

I might try and get mines checked just now while it's only done 600 miles

Is this still going on !!!!!! I had a 07 VRS TDI and exactly the same happened to me after 15K approx. They adjusted the rear suspension and I got the tyres changed as they were droning away like a good un and it was fine for the next 40K miles. Didnt cost me anything though as it was an HSBC lease car.

well, i noticed last night that this has now happened on both rear tyres- GREAT! I went down to my local ATS garage woday who do alignment checks for free and they said that it was perfect and the alignment isnt an issue. Their personal opinion was that the tyres are too wide for the car but they also said that they see it on loads and loads of cars nowadays, saabs, Vauxhalls.....

I got a geometry check done by a specialist for £50, and it made a big difference to the way the car felt. Try and find a specialist rather than a chain.

  • 3 weeks later...

I am just writing to Skoda now.

I am giving them until the end of next week (17th december) to respond.

I am including links to this forum and the subject, at whcih point if they dont respond positively, I will start a specifc vote, and then pass the info to trading standards, and watchdog.

Why?

Skoda now towing the line with the group "not our fault' bulletin. VW etc didnt have the revised settings, dont think it works all the time.

Its odd as yes its a design issue with the A5 chassis, all models effected be it a Leon, A3, Golf, Touran, Octavia etc but not all of the same model do it. So they put it down to loading, driving style, tyre type, tyre pressures or alignment.

Hi

It was the dealer in Stirling - they were very helpful and did the rear geometry under warranty a couple of months ago, however, I thought the steering has always been a bit heavy so I decided to get a full 4 wheel geometry done to make sure all was ok.

I took the car to CLCM in Edinburgh today and the guy checked and adjusted the front and back. The back was "miles out" and the front was also a bit out.

After the adjustments were made, I got a printout with the before and after settings.

I drove the car home and although I liked driving it before, it is so much better now - the steering is a lot lighter and doesn't feel like the front wheels are fighting to get back to straight when going round corners (if that makes sense).

It is so easy to drive now, it just feels effortless and glides along :)

Highly recommend CLCM - just a wee place and the guy seems to take a bit of pride in his work

Cheers

Dave

Skoda wanted £75 to check my Geometry so i took it to ATS who do a free check. They said all geometry was perfect so not convinced, i took the car to mototec in south wales sho then informed me that the rears were WAY out and also the fronts were out. All put right for £60.00. The car drives like new all over again!

After the adjustments were made, I got a printout with the before and after settings.

Any chance of posting this?

Ta!

My 2010 FL VRS suffers this same problem.

It's done 7500 miles driven in a normal restrained way and it drones like chuff, to such an extent that it's really starting to bother me.

I am due a service in January but would be interested to know when anyone gets a response from Skoda.

Thanks

Mine was noticed by Skoda at the first service and they arent interested in sorting it. the response i had was that its common especially in the VRS range and usually down to the way the car is driven. I got a specialist to sort it out in the end.
