Well Ive done it now - buying a new Octy Estate

Featured Replies

Ever rolled a snowball from the top of a hill. It seems small and managable at first - then it grows and grows. Such was the experience that led me to spending nearly

Hehehehe , nice tale.

Good luck with the new car. I look forward to hearing how you get on.

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced my next car will be a 2.0TDI estate elegance , just with far less options (metallic paint and sunroof , oh and possibly the sports suspension and bigger wheels.)

Just watch out - thats the way the snowball starts :D

Well there are some options I'd definately rule out.

The upgraded stereo and speakers wouldn't be to my liking , although I'd end up spending a similar amount of money on some Kenwood & Sony kit to replace the factory items.

Xenons would be tempting , but I don't think I could justify the cost , probably , erm , maybe.................. :)

I love a good story, and that was a good 'un.

Good luck with the new car -May your tunes sound sweet, and your airbags never deploy.......

Sounds like an order list I could well find myself doing... but nearly 20k.. ouch!

What - no DSG????

Sounds like you've certainly made the most of the options list - should be a very nice car. I would have liked the leather, but couldn't afford both the leather and the DSG - eventually decided not changing gear was more important......

Upgraded stereo should be good too - I'm still pre-MP3 so sticking with the standard 'Stream' stereo - although I might look into upgrading the speakers later. As you say, the 140Bhp Diesel is fantastic.

Good luck with it.

DSG - nope - ever since I had a shot of an automatic and kept forgetting and putting in the clutch. Constantly being cut in half by a seat belt is no fun at all.

An estate with Sunroof and metallic paint is near as dammit 18k which is about as much as I'd consider spending. Thinking rationally I would probably pass on the sports suspension as there are a fair few speed humps on my road.

Hopefully with a good bit of negotiation that would come in at under 17k which isn't too bad , although a big jump up from the 13k I paid for my current octy elegance.

It is a lot of money.perhaps off topic but you get a lot of car for it.think people who thought skoda were some sort of cheap make will be surprised both at the price and seeing how good the car will look when it lands on your drive!when my stepfather paid

I know the feeling, although I went with a full list options to the dealer then crossed off as the price wasn't coming down that much, I choose virtually the same in Hatch version less curtains, but with 17in alloys, rear spoiler and exh trim,

PS I thought they always have a full tank incl!

Hi! Like to hear what you thought about the 105 vs 140 in terms of refinement. Is the 105 that much more of a racket maker? I've been driving 1.9 TDIs in Audis since 1992, starting with an 80 with 90bhp and 134 lb.ft., then an A4 with 90/150 and now an A6 with 110/173 and rate highly the low rpm pick-up and linear delivery. You're not the first I've read seeming to suggest the 140's characterics are a bit too on/off. I'm tempted to spend the premium for the 140 on adding DSG and maybe a remap to a 105

Good luck with the 140, looking forward to reading how it shapes up.

Any news on pricing / availability of when the 4x4 2.0TDi 140 Estate is out ?

I thought the 4x4 was going to be the 1.9 only

Shame.

From the test drive I did I thought the 105 was actually very good and didnt feel underpowered in the same way as the Avensis did. It felt more refined than the 140. It was just missing that slight edge that the audi 115 had.

The 140 just had that extra woo-hoo factor - will have to watch my licence when I get it (no tickets YET) - given the money Im spending I felt I'd regret being sensible and going for the 105 - it was a hard decision given the premium especially as the snowball gathered pace - what the hell you only live once though.

I'll be careful about DSG and check it out on the web etc - have heard rumours aboud VAG group DSG boxes - may be unfounded - didnt bother following it up myself as I personally find autos a bit unnerving to drive.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Personally, I think Skoda are going to get thier fingers burnt a little bit with the Octy 2

IF you look at the price increase to around 18k, there are a lot of other cars in that price range, and no matter what you say or think, the badge snobbery is still there

The old Octy, at around 13k was good value for money, now with the Octy 2 going up to around 18k, its middle of the road, people are gonna look to the Toyotas, Fords, Vauxhalls etc etc.

The old top of the range Octy TDI 130 L&K estate wasn't exactly dirt cheap either which is closest to the new TDI 140 elegance when you look at the spec.

List price of an old TDI 110 elegance hatch was 14700 or thereabouts before the runout price drops.

List price of a new TDI 105 elegance hatch is 14900.

Thats still a lot better value than the equivalent spec golf which costs more and is a lot smaller , and is also noticably cheaper than the bottom of the range mundaneo which costs 500 quid more.

There have certainly been some issues posted on the Audi TT forum with the DSG box, but they're mainly complaining about hesitation. Once I'd waded through lots of posts, it seems that they don't like the fact that, if you approach a roundabout (slowing down) and then give it a bootful it takes a moment or two to sort the gears out. Standard Auto stuff really - it's not a mindreader! There have been some other problems with it, and a few people have needed new gearboxes, but on the whole I get the impression it's sorted now. All I can say is that, when I test drove a 1.9 with the DSG it was wonderful, and I think the 2.0 will be even better when I (eventually) get it.

Be careful of remaps though - the DSG has fairly tight torque limits, and the 2.0PD is already near them, so I don't know how much you could reasonably get away with on a 1.9.

I did consider going for the 1.9 (a lot cheaper), but knew I'd always wish I'd gone for the 2.0, so decided to stretch the budget a bit.

That's a nice spec, but I would have opted for the DSG box since it is arguably better than either the manual or auto.

I thought the DSG came with flappy paddles ( clarksonism ), and not with the auto box ( am probably mis reading wot is written - old age & senility catching up :) )

A Q? carrdarius, ref the MP3 player, could you not use the CD Changer sockets in the back of the HU , so it uses the HU amp & current speakers. ( mine is set up that way ).

I have seen some info and wiring diagrams for some of the units. Seems to be varying opinion on whats needed to fool the head unit into thinking there is a changer attached. Various solutions are posted on the web from shorting pins to building a gadget (which may be able to remote control the iriver) to interface boxes for iPods (e.g. Dennisson) - it all seems very specific to the exact model of headunit

What I was not sure of is what support there is for the Stream and Audience headunits. I went for the audience headunit as worst case I'll be able to play mp3s on cd. I'm hoping that in time it will be clearer as to what I'll need to connect to the Audience headunit

What headunit do you use ? Did you need to do anything special to connect it ? Has anyone managed to connect an HD mp3 player to the Audience unit.

Ultimate aim would be to

- use the OEM head unit

- use the CD changer in the Audience headunit as I sometime like to stick a CD on

- use an aux-in etc to listen to and control an mp3 player via car player controls on steering wheel (does Audience unit have wiring for an external changer ??)

- have track info displayed on the head unit

I'm even willing to consider buying a dedicated ipod for the car if thats what it takes as there is more support for ipod based solutions. I'm not willing to replace the headunit though.

cheers
