Remaps? - last time honest!!

Featured Replies

I get my Vrs on March 1st (hurry up - hurry up - hurry up........) and I am going to have a re-map of sorts (about 165BHP hopefully) done after about 5k-6k (3months for me) but I am still not sure which one to go for. I have read the threads on this forum over and over and the info seems quite dis-jointed and more often than not, contradictory.

My questions are these?

1. Is it worth it (i.e. appreciable difference)

2. Which one is the best to go for (Doh that's gone and done it)

3. How much should I pay

4. Permanent V switchable (reliability and ease of switching version?)

5. Effect on MPG (yeah, yeah, less I know :D )

6. Best time (K miles) to do it

Thanks guys (and girls)

Any and all comments gratefully received.

Cheers

1. Is it worth it (i.e. appreciable difference)

There is an appreciable difference. Is it worth it is down to you! Can you afford to lose your warranty ;)

2. Which one is the best to go for (Doh that's gone and done it)

Pick any of the main ones and you'll get about equal performance. At the end of the day it comes down to how much you want to pay' date=' how far you want to travel, and whether you want it to be switchable or not....

3. How much should I pay

Check out the group buys and discounts section - typically anything from 350 upwards, I think....

4. Permanent V switchable (reliability and ease of switching version?)

Very easy to swtich but does push the price of a remap up!

5. Effect on MPG (yeah' date=' yeah, less I know :D )

In normal driving, you will probably see an increase, but if you drive with your foot to the floor everywhere, it'll drop :D

6. Best time (K miles) to do it

Seems to vary, but I think anything after 10k seems to be fine. Saying that, we have members who have got it mapped at delivery mileage, so it depends how much you want the extra power ;)

If you don't want the expense of a remap, you can always get one of the 30 quid tuning boxes off eBay which will give you 25-30% power increase simply by running the car a bit richer. Not as good as a remap, but very easy to fit and remove and

As above. Like the idea of a switchable map myself ;)

I've got one of the tuning boxes that Scooby Chris mentioned and I am quite happy with that. Cost me just over

A few of us on here recently got the AmD 1 click ( yes me )

It is an excellent switchable alternative, quoted approx +40 BHP & approx + 40 lb/ft.

Wot I will say, is that if you want a kick in the pants, this will give it, if you want a custom, then go to 1 of the mappers on here.

is that if you want a kick in the pants' date=' this will give it, if you want a custom, then go to 1 of the mappers on here.

Sorry mate, but can you explain what you mean by this????

Pretty sure he means if you want to go faster the One Click does the job. if you want a custom remap written for you car go to a tuner and have it done.

How long have you been using the little begger? I had one briefly' date=' the engine management light came on after about 1500 miles, had to go to my local skoda dealer to remove the fault.

sent the box back for a refund.[/quote']

Apparently on the '04 cars, the ECU can get confused by the signal coming from the fuel sensor (that the tuning box alters). The fault is harmless and can be reset by VAG-COM easily enough :D
