1.9D Pick up engine louder after cambelt change

Featured Replies

Hello,

Yesterday I changed the cam belt on my 2000 reg 1.9D pick up. Admittedly this was my first cam belt change. After finishing the job the engine noise is now a bit louder when inside the cab. With the bonnet up and the engine running there are no unusual noises or knocks but when driving it just seems a bit louder. I double checked the timing this morning and found the camshaft to be very slightly out. This was due to me not checking that the Draper camshaft locking bar was in the camshaft perfectly as it is thinner than the slot in the shaft.(I wouldn't recommend this kit as the locking bar is pressed/punched out of mild steel and is probably not very flat. Also the injection pump locking pin was too big and I ended up using a drill bit ). After sometime double checking and turning the engine over by hand several times before checking that the locking pin, locking bar and flywheel marks were lined up I was pretty happy I'd sorted it but a test drive showed it was still noisy.

I should say that before removing the old belt when I set the engine up for TDC on no. 1 the flywheel mark wasn't in the hole. When i fitted the new belt I adjusted it so that everything was lined up correctly.

The noise is a normal diesel engine noise but is now louder.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? The timing has changed as with the old belt it was slightly out. Also I had difficulty accessing the vertical bolts when refitting the RH engine mount. Is it possible that noise is being transmitted through to the cab through worn/mis-aligned engine mounts? (I've had a look but they seem ok).

Thanks

Pete

Does it run ok, have full power ect?

Thanks for your reply.

It starts and runs fine with no lumpiness or lack of power and has the same kind of sound as before but maybe slightly louder. To be honest I'm beginning to doubt there is a problem as when I drove to work this morning I had the radio on as usual! I think it may have been a combination of paranoia and having the radio off so that I could listen to the engine! One thought that did cross my mind is that the position of the crankshaft relative to the pump and camshaft has changed slightly. Perhaps the timing has become slightly retarded making it a bit louder? If I'd thought about it I would have marked the flywheel in the original position but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Considering how well it's running I don't think I could justify taking it apart again or having the head off to check it out. I think I'll just drive it and see how it goes.

Cheers

Hi, I have just (today) changed the camshaft oil seal and fitted a new cambelt to my 1.9D (year 2000) now at 115,000 Miles. I fitted a new water pump at the same time (small leak).

I now have a whining noise that i didn't have before.

I've just taken the cambelt top cover off to investigate.....

The alternator belt tracks straight and true: The new cam belt doesn't! it waivers by maybe 2mm most noticeably on the injection pump pulley.

any ideas ?

Thanks,

What workshop manual do you have?

Hi, Haynes. why?

I was afraid of that. See PM for a better manual for 1.9D engine. Read carefully every step of changing the timing belt and see if you missed something.

When you set the crank to tdc did you use ths line thats machined onto the edge of the flywheel or the diamond shaped one on the edge facing the gearbox?

Just a thought when I did my belt the spacer behind the engine mount/tensioner fell do we n had to strip to get back out
