Automatic boot opening for a tenner

Featured Replies

Wow. I really like this mod. And for only a tenner as well.

I rented a Mercedes C-class once and that did this too. You walk up to it and just press the boot unlock and open it popped! It of course could not auto close but your hands are not full when you that!

And I see no reason why this won't work on the Yeti.

But don't open it in a car park with a low roof, I reckon the Yeti boot will be tall enough to clout the roof!

True but no different to opening it in a low car park manually! Thus ONLY ever use the fob boot button if you can see there is nothing in the way.

Does this not apply to non-auto opening (standard) anyway?

Seems a great idea to me.

What size spring then Johann........

Yes as long as you can remember, I'd probably forget and ruin the tailgate. I saw someone trying to be flash in a Mercedes ML do it in a car park and the tailgate clouted the roof and the light fitting smashed the rear screen. He soon stopped his mobile phone conversation about how drunk he'd been and how much money he spent at the weekend when he damaged his car!

Well when you read that whole thread the Octavia hatch guys are struggling to get it to work - but the angles and weight of that might play a role. All the Estate guys got it to work with a red heavy duty spring. So as long as we can measure the Yeti struts - or get confirmation that they are the same diameter as the Octy Estate one I'm thinking the red springs will work too.

I have a C Class and the tailgate DOES auto close with a just touch of a button on the tailgate. Really useful as saves dirty fingers! The strap arrangement on the Yeti is a pain as is having to touch a dirty car to open the boot and finally close it. Mark you - the single strap is much better than the wrist snapping loop arrangement for our old Fabia estate!

Lots of cars have electric tailgate opening AND closing. This costs considerably more than to just fit a £10 spring and some black Heat Shrink to cover it up with! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Most C-class Mercs do not have electric boot opening and closing and just have a big old springloaded hinge to "boing" the bootlid up!

By all means go for it guys but I cannot help but think you'll be stressing your dampers far more than they are designed to handle. Can't say I'm fussed on the look of the springs either.

The replacement dampers video looks like a far neater way to handle it (albeit at greater cost) but even then they must be longer than the original and probably stressed more than they are designed for in normal operation.

All told I'll give it a miss and devote my attention to trying to get some recompense from Skoda for the folding mirror debacle.
