What did i Fix?

Featured Replies

Hi all, bit of an odd one this, so i'll start from the top:

Noticed a few weeks ago that the mpg was getting very low. Used to be able to get about 420 miles from a full tank, but only recently able to get about 300 from a tank!!

Managed roughly 38 mpg on the way home today, but has been a struggle to keep it at 30 for a few weeks.

Also, the car seemed to be a bit slow, like it was before the remap. Just wasnt pulling like it did when i got the remap, was a bit of hard work to get it fully going.

So, whilst i was at work i had a fiddle about as i had 40 mins or so spare.

I re-attached a black pipe to the Starter motor bracket that had clearly not been put back on when i had the clutch done.

Took the Air filter out (K&N panel) and gave it a clean up, though it really wasnt all that dirty tbh.

I also took the electrical connector of the MAF, whilst taking the air filter out and put that back afterwards.

Thats all i did, but the engine sounds better straight away, drove better and the Mpg was better...... so what the hell did i do?!?!?

Is it purely possible that someting wasnt connected properly and i managed to "disturb" it and put it right, or maybe the maf connector wasnt on correctly? i really have no idea :0)

Use the Search bar for a CAGE mod. that should explain it a little better.

Ahhh i see, have never heard of that CAGE mod before but it does make sense, had no codes so to speak, so thought something was up.

Might have to have a proper clean out tomorrow and see if i can get some of that grease.

Could anyone tell me if this grease would be suitable for the cage mod?

It says "prevents arcing" and "high quality insulator"

I'd rather not fill the MAF connector with a conductive paste!!!

I'm quite keen after seeing this post yesterday to try this too, more for my tatty old Mondeo TDDI to see if it runs any smoother as i'd like to put it up for sale this weekend and wow potential buyers with the silky smooth running, lol..... obviously i'm not expecting miracles.

I'm struggling to find a local stockist of dielectric grease though, the original post i read from 2004 on the TD Forum suggests Maplins and the like rather than motor factors such as Halfords

Try it first, plug and un plug the sensor a couple of times to make a clean contact...... then if it helps pop some grease in, it just stops the contacts corroding.

I think the RE90X is a 50G tube instead of the spray can HTH Cage-Mod-003-765134.jpg looks like this

Well a little update on the situation.

I took my car down to Cadnam Garage and saw Simon, top bloke and knows his stuff :) he put the diagnostics on my car and the MAF was ok, but the front "wideband" O2 sensor was nackered.

Apparently it should be between 0.1v to 0.9v and fluctuate a lot when the engine is running. Mine was between -0.03 and +0.014, so i got one from MPD for £53 and hopefully gonna get it put in in the next couple of days.

EDIT: ok the o2 sensor is in, just gotta wait and see if it improves the mpg.
