Opinion on A6 2.7tdi

Featured Replies

As mentioned in other posts I thinking about selling trading in the TFSI as the cost of super unleaded and 32mpg are getting a bit much.

Driving the car like a granny permanently kind of defeats the purpose of having a VRS.

I know I could get a VRS derv but I like to change cars when I change cars.

I've seen an A6 I like, I like 'em big. But being a natural coward and never having bought a 'used' car for 10 years, they've all been pre-reg or new, I'm nervous about paying out for one.

The A6 is a 2.7tdi Avant 2005 (05) and it sitting at £9995, I think I'd get £9k for the VRS (after speaking with the dealer briefly) . A6 with that engine should be economical enough to save some fuel but not so slow I'll want to kill myself on the commute.

It's chain cam driven and a manual, I hoped that would remove most of the big failure points.

But it's got 80k on the clock. I mean 10k for a 5 year old car is it likely to go bang in the next year?

On one hand you hear stories about big engined dervs doing 500k on the other is nothing but tales of DPF woes.

I could buy an 09 Vectra derv with 22k on the clock but that makes a little bit of sick come up in my mouth. I think I'd rather pay the petrol price than go from a nice car to a 'budget' brand. Skoda has made me a brand snob.

Lots of A4 2.0tdi avants but similar mileages all needing cam belts. Haven't sold mine so need to trade in and current Glasses guide figure for the VRS is very good.

what sort of commute have you got? Are you sure you want to chop in your car for a car which tbh wont be a huge amount better - manufacturers figures for 2.7tdi is just above 40 combined, so realistically will be ~35mpg and more expensive fuel!

Commute is only 30 mile round trip but it's the twice weekly visits the wife makes to her mothers at 120 miles a time that are killing my bank balance.

I've been checking some of the real world mpg sites and the manual 2.7 does seem to reach 40/42. VRS runs on Super Unleaded so the devil's fuel is slightly cheaper.

But I'm also thinking that the VRS is due a timing belt next year, and there is the Teeves60 issue sitting there like a big poo on the carpet. I've no doubt if it popped in the next year I'd be able to get Skoda/VAG to cough up by threatening them with Small Claims Court but I'd rather not have the hassle.

It's hard to get anything interesting. Just goes to show what a good motor the Octy is.

I'd look at a Scout but they really do hold their money.

Keep the vRS and buy the wife an Audi A2 to visit the mother-in-law. I regularly saw 60mpg average and you can get very tidy ones these days for just over £3,000. Insurance is low and the annual tax is £35 for the 1,4 TDI (which I had).

That's a long story. She's fussier than Kim Jong-il's food tester and I've no money to buy her anything.

Whats the issue with Cambelts? £300 tops for one. You wont have a DPF on an 05 Audi anyway. 2.7's are good engines and you will realistically see 40ish if you drive it like a granny!

What about a Superb?

I'd take a new Superb, but not the old. I don't think a saloon would work too well for us with prams etc.

I keep looking at S60s but the saloon boot makes me think twice.

I didn't buy an S60 a few years back because the boot apeture is quite small. The boot was physically big enough to hold the pram, but the opening wasn't large enough to actually get the pram inside...

The s60 is a fine car, however mine is a 2.0t with 99k on it on an 05 plate. Cambelt has just snapped...not happy. Also 27mpg driving sensibly..My best mate has a185bhp d5 and he loves it and the 43mpg...

Superb is my weapon of choice!! I had a vectra diesel 150bhp on an 06 plate. Watch out for big 1000 pound swirl flap issues...I got mine done under warranty but with 2 alternators and several other issues it was the final straw.

I wish I had kept my superb because it really was superb.

I was about to suggest a D5 volvo of some form as the are very pokey and when the car does break it won't break the bank like the Audi.

The A6 2.7tdi is my favourite of the A6 diesels because it has the best balance of economy and performance and there are brilliant quality and well engineered. However both my uncle and grandfather have had an A6 in the past five years, one a 3.0tdi and the other a 2.0T petrol, both mechanically have been very good, suspension engine and brakes, but the electircs have been very costly to repair. a car packed with so much technology and electrics will always have little niggles which you must live with or pay way too much to repair.

I haven't ever been in a D5 engined Volvo but the 4 cylinder diesels in the C30 and S40 which i have both driven have proved both economical and quite rev happy.

Seem to run into the same reoccurring niggles on many of these premium diesels.

Swirl flaps are a big issue on 2.5 and 3.0 derv BMWs, the Volvo's too. DPFs seem to be an issue on everything that has them. Volvos have issues with the regen forcing diesel into the oil system.

Everything with a cam belt...

Scary business buying cars that aren't new.
