Faluty temperature sensor?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a Fabia, 2002 1.4 MPI Classic. 30 000 miles now on the clock.

I recently had a an Engine Management Control fault light come up (you know the yellow light that looks like an little engine), so I read the manual and it said the car will

initialise an emergency mode to enable me to get to my nearest dealership etc...

What I did was as follows... pulled over in a parking lot. Turned the car off via the ignition. Stared the car again and the light was still showing. Opened the hood and inspected wiring to the coolant resevoir. I unplugged what looks like a multi wired loom cable to that anti freeze resevoir and plugged it in again. Checked my dash board - the engine management fault light has never since returned.

BUT... but but but...

Now this is happening... when I drive my car from being stationary for say 8 hours, for a driving time of eg. 30 mins duration, the temperature gauge does not given a reading at all, it stays at ZERO...Nada!

THEN..

when i get home park and turn off the car....then turn ignition back on/ or start the car either way... WHAM! the temperature gauge starts given me the correct reading I should have been getting...half a gauge reading.

Right then, can anybody fathom what could be wrong here? Think I need to replace the temperature probe? (which ill need to find!)

Hope you can help.

Thanks

I had 2 replaced on my Fabia Mk1 as it seemed to be a common fault.

If you take off the platsic engine cover the temp sender is to the right on top. It has a clip that holds it in and an O ring. Its dead easy to change just do it when the engine is cold. You wont lose hardly any coolant. If you buy a replacement temp sender then you will know what to look for. Dont forget the O ring as well. My old MPI put the engine light on as it wasnt getting a proper coolant temp. Mine would aslo fail to read then pop back up again. Its just a push on electrical connector to the sender

Easy fix

Sorry I cant be more precise but its been a while since I had that car.

Thank you Raisbeck, I will look into that at the weekend. You have made it sound straight forward to fix.

Thanks again for your advice!
