Battery replacement....I'm a little scared!

Featured Replies

Evening again... went to start the vRS tonight and the battery is flat after only 6 days of not moving? I am assuming it is most likely dead. I have read though that a fair few people on here have had issues with power spikes when replacing the battery and blowing the ABS ECU...very scary! Is there a way of preventing this???

Cheer yet again all.

Just fit it! How do you think dealers do it?

yes but I refer you to this "i have the same fault on my vrs at the moment, plugged it in and it looks like changing the battery has spiked the abs ecu......yes just by changing the battery......common acording to a vw technician where i work. so new abs pump ecu required " from here.... http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/180610-skoda-octavia-warning-indicator-after-changing-battery/page__p__2176765__hl__battery__fromsearch__1entry2176765

I have never heard of that before, and it is not common.

Just change the battery like normal. There is no special procedure for changing it.

I did mine last month too and had no problems.

There is an iota of truth in this as the ABS module has two permanent live feeds.

The more 'careful' or hesitant you are, the more likely you are to have problems, because this can cause an intermittant supply.

When changing the battery, hold the terminal against the battery post, whilst you loosen/tighten the clamp nut.

i have never ever had problems disconnecting or changing the battery, and mine has been disconnected many times for electrical upgrades

Ok I think the earth first and earth last method is the one to go for....cheers again all!

Worried about the radio resetting into "SAFE" mode (probably undue concern), I changed the battery with a mains powered battery charger connected to the terminals (ensuring that ALL electicals including door lights were off), therefore maintaining a continous supply.

That sir is also a good call!! Cheers.

Unless you are certain that the charger has a regulated output, this is an extremely bad idea and can cause damage to electrical modules. Many of the cheaper battery chargers are nothing more than a transformer and bridge rectifier. It's the battery that acts like a capacitor and smooths the output.

had to do that with a friends land rover to stop the immob and alarm going mad, in the pouring rain. what a pain in the arse.

I have always used a Draper Memory Saver, just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket and away you go. saves losing memory codes and everything else. Simples!

Just to close this one off...New battery on and no probs! Phew!!! Cheers all

Glad you got it sorted.

Could have also used a jump starter and connect to the car fag lighter to fag lighter thus keeping the flow of voltage.
